Post-jam version

Now that the voting is ended, I fixed the known bugs and added a menu, but no in-game content were changed. If you want a playable version of the game, here is the html5: beetracks.itch.io/fireman-descend

(In case you find any bugs, please report it on itch.io page, thanks)

Gameplay

Use the arrows to move and jump and space bar to use the water.

Story of the game

The fireman rescued everybody but found himself surrounded by fire on the top of a building. Now he needs to hurry and descend carefully, but fast, to the exit.

About the development

It was rushed so it starts immediately, I had no time to place a menu, and it is a very short game. There's no sfx, only music. I hope it is fun to play!

Known bugs

When you jump the ledge instead using the stairs, you probably will have a crash. It happens because the fireman was supposed to die, but a wrong reference to the variable breaks the game.

The presentation was delightful. Unfortunately the game crashes when you run out of time.

Nice little platformer with a unique concept. I got a fatal error whenever I fell off of a ledge.

Well, it's short but kinda fun. Not the best graphics but it serves the game well! I personally like the music but it feels out of place. Would make sense if you could do everything faster but you can't drop down from ledges :D Well, I know you didn't make the full 48 hours so it happens. Fun but lacking. Wonder what it would have looked like if you used all the gm48 hours!

I wish I could have used more time to polish it. I might make a post-jam version anyway. My original idea was to use particles for the fire and water, but I'm not skilled with particles yet. Thank you for your review!

Cool little game, even though it might be just a little bit too short.

I liked the gameplay and how you couldn't make all the jumps (Crashing is not what I was thinking of but oh well) Music was ok, even though it felt out of place, and the art was pretty nice.

Level design wasn't the best, but with such a short game there wasn't much else to do.

Game crashed when I jumped on this box in the flames

The fire effect was great. Was disappointed to find that some fires couldn't be put out after seeing so many I could put out with the water. The mechanics of moving the boxes with the water are unique.

The graphics are all great for a 48 hour jam and the music sounds pretty good even though it's repetitive. It's repetitive but not jarringly so.

I got the game to crash when my time ran out. Sad to see a game this responsive have an error that kills the program.

Overall, looks good, but seems like you ran out of time before you could get what you wanted out of it. Hope you learned a lot, as I did as well, and maybe shrink that scope a little next time. :)

I made this game in 8h (my plan was to spend at least 12h-14h, but you know, things happens haha). I uploaded in the last minute literally. The fire that can't be extinguished should really have a different sprite, I agree. And yes, it was the first time I implemented plaftorm behaviour with climbing and shooting, so I learned lot of things.

Thank you very much for your feedback!

The game was fun and I liked jumping right into the action. I enjoyed the music, it made the experience much more exciting. I also enjoyed the water mechanics and was digging the art style. Ladders worked great too. My only two pieces of feedback would be 1) to allow the player to be able to drop from a ledge (I know you mentioned you fixed the bug) but when they land potentially be stunned a little as punishment for jumping, something like that may be a cool addition. And 2) make it more obvious which flames cannot be put out with the water.

Nice work though, I had fun with it and played until I beat it. Good luck!

I agree, the fire should have another sprite for player diferentiate it. About the ledge, it's a kill. I don't have any mechanics where getting stunned would be useful, but I appreciate your suggestion. Maybe if I decide to upgrade it with new hazards, I'll do that. Glad you played it to the end! Thank you very much for the review!

I like the graphics and the music (though some sound effects would be nice). The gameplay is pretty fun and I enjoy being able to push boxes around with the hose.

One problem is that there was a patch of fire that seemed to be immune to water. I assume this was intentional to force you to push the box into it, but there should be some indicator that the fire is immune.

Unfortunately I also encountered the error when falling.

Yes, it is intentional. I wanted to change the sprite, but time was up :/

I want to, at least, update it to the point where there will be some sfx. After the jam I intend to make a HTML5 version of it with things that were missing.

Thanks for playing and for the review!

I think this is a very nice idea! And I love the graphics and music. I still haven't managed to escape..... I will keep trying

Thanks! That's the spirit Secret Cat! I'll make a HTML5 version after the jam with things that weren't in this one (like sound effects, a menu and sfx) and, hopefully, it won't break suddenly XD

      Thank you very much!

I enjoyed this. I like the art and the music. Gameplay was fun and I like the overall idea. The error you get when jumping off a ledge is really unfortunate. Debug this one and finish it up, it's a great start.

Thank you! I already fixed my code. It was a silly error, but time was up and I didn't tested. Anyway, what counts it's the experience. I really learned a lot (as every GM48 I participate). :D

Despite being rushed, this was really fun to play. I'd be interested to see where it goes if you decide to keep improving it after the jam.

The music fits really nicely with the gameplay, and when the clock gets down quite low it starts to feel surprisingly intense. The art for the player is charming, and the background is simplistic but looks fine. The mechanic of putting out fires is really cool, and it's an interesting take on the theme of descending.

My only complaints are things you've addressed in the description, and they could all be fixed with more time.

    1) Sound effects. I can tell from the music that you've got the ability to make them, it would be great to hear a splash when spraying the hose or something. Just to give the game a more complete feel

    2) I ran into the error when jumping from the ledge. It really does take you out of the game entirely, and it sucks

    3) More levels

Overall it's great, but it just feels incomplete. Good job!

I admit I almost gave up of the game because I wouldn't able to place the sounds the way I want (sound is my main thing), but talking to Peter I was convinced to upload the most complete possible, even if I couldn't place any sound. Fortunately I was able to make a music for it in the last hour (in this game I think bgm is more relevant than sfx, for the tension).

The error was unfortunate. I already fixed it and made a start screen. The error was a local variable of an object being accessed by script, but I forgot to reference it -_- I just need to finish the sfx now. Originally, the game would have 3 stages, and the 2nd would be in the exterior of the building. But, you know, time... hahaha

Thank you very much for your detailed review!
