Challenging game! I included it in my GM48: Colors are Important compilation video series, if you’d like to take a look. :) https://youtu.be/BEHqR0Z-UhM

(I didn't read all feedback below)

    • I gotta mention again that although it would beat the point to use keyboard for color switching, it would solve the game's natural throwback of needing to move up and down constantly
    • It also would avoid you clicking on another color while trying to shoot for a colored square near the pickers (for better accuracy)
    • I also wonder if limiting the color could make the game's speed to be a bit more forgiving, as the game is hard as soon as you start playing. A gradual difficulty with colors being added over time would have been nice imo
    • The game is super juicy! And I love that each enemies has a different face!

Thanks for your feedback! While most of the things you've mentioned already have been said before, it's nice to know everyone is thinking the same thing, rather than a just single opinion.

I like this mechanic. A lot. I agree with what other people have said about the style and feedback (that it's fantaaastic). I know you've paid attention to the feedback you've gotten so I won't try to echo too much.

One thing I would have loved to have seen was a gradual reveal of the colors from the start (maybe over time?). I don't mind the samey colors, I just think it was a lot to start out with right away.

Instead of changing how the colors are picked, the other thing I wonder about is what would have happened if you had changed where the colors are on the screen OR the window dimensions. Because it's a rectangle, enemies coming from above and below are far more difficult to deal with. There's just way less time. That's further taken away for enemies from the top because that's where all the colors are; I accidentally switched colors shooting upwards more than once (I know that's an echo of previous feedback). I wonder what the game would have felt like with colors on the side or maybe just a more square playing field.

This is a great game though and fits the theme perfectly. You nailed it. Thanks!

Hmm... Placing on the side? I never actually thought of that.

It never really occurred to me that the top and bottom enemies were closer than the sides. The fact that the colors would be on the side would probably have helped a lot. A slow introduction also seems interesting.

If you know how to use GMS 1.4 or GMS 2, you can use the project file I have included in the downloads if you think you can do a concept of it. I really encourage people to try to and see if the project could be better than I've made it to be.

Thank you so much for the feedback, @Croaks.

I liked the game it was a blast, simple idea but well done. Font could have been different, cursor changing to picker somehow mislead my understanding where the cursor position was, which increased difficulty. Some colors were too similiar, especially when colors in hud changed to transparent or something time to time. Also trying to shoot enemies near hud could accidently lead picking color, which had horrible consicuences to my succession. What I would have changed was make able to pick your color with keyboard numbers, though you wouldnt pick the color same manner. It was good game :)

Really cool game that starts immediately with a hard difficulty, I think the idea was implemented pretty well and the game was quite balanced, it just gets repetitive way too quickly.

Nice game! Simple and fun! It gets really intense right before you die! Highest score was 30. The music was good, and the sound effects very chimey and retro feeling!

I like that you changed the faces of the various baddies that are coming for you, really increased the visual interest of the game. The screen shake when you shoot is very nice too.

One thing I would have liked, is a different way of selecting the colors. Many times I would try to shoot an enemy that's marching through the color selections, and I wind up switching colors accidentally.

Also, having to move the mouse back and forth between shooting and color selection was not my favorite thing. Then again, that may be intended as one of the challenge factors.

Grey and White are too similar in my opinion, making it difficult to distinguish. Again, that might be intended as part of the challenge!

The game was really intuitive. A straight forward, pick-up-and-play game where the objective is crystal clear without instructions. A lot of fun trying to beat your high score! Nicely done!

I wanted to make sure the enemies were more interesting to look at then having just plain colors come at you. Some of them were even inspired by emojis. I pretty much use screen shake whenever I can. Whenever I can shake a screen, I'll do it, even if it's just by a little.

Hmm... That may be something that could be done. If you have a concept that might work, I have provided the project file in the downloads. The only thing I can think of to do is making scrolling work. But they are all actually the same object, so that may end up being quite hard.

Kinda. Though I didn't intend for it to be annoying.

The similar colors actually aren't intended to be challenging. I'll admit, it can be difficult, and I'd would change it.

Thank you for your kind words. The gameplay is simply conveyed with the menu screen's text simply saying, "Click to start." This gives the intention that the player will be using the mouse and not the keyboard. Now the colors, that one is easy. The color wheel showing up and the colored enemies show a connection.

Thank you so much for your feedback!

This game, although simple, is super addicting. Some more refined / more interesting sounds and a tad bit of polish could turn this into something I'd play once in a while to see if I can beat my highscore, which was 89 on the third attempt :D

    Keep it up! <3

This gets really frantic really quickly, but really satisfying to play. It scratches a certain itch that I can't quite pinpoint. Something to do with fast responses and clicking precision. Really good momentum to this game, I played several times to beat my own high score. Very satisfying both gameplay-wise and aesthetically. Only critiques are: the colour picker doesn't seem to be centered properly, so I sometimes misclick the colour that I want. There might also be a few too many colours? The dark/light shades can be a bit tricky to differentiate at speed. Otherwise, I thoroughly enjoyed it !

To reply to your point: Teh colour picker is only slightly off-center. The point of the cursor does not align perfectly with the point of hte colour picker - but instead it seems to align with the center of hte colour picker when the icon switches. Nothing game breaking, but could add to the fluidity of it if that was perfect :)

Thanks for playing. Glad you enjoyed it. I honestly thought I centered the color picker. Hmm... Well, I'll admit that I don't think this is the best I could've done, and I generally hope that next time around I can create a better and a lot cooler game.

      Thanks for your feedback! :)

This is really interesting in concept, but I find the interface too cumbersome to be fun. It might work better if the color picking options somehow tracked with your mouse so that you're not constantly going back and forth between the top of the screen then back to wherever your intended target is. I also found myself clicking outside of the window several times.

Well, the clicking outside the window is precisely why I added the ability to play in full screen. Pressing F12 should do it for you.

This is a cool idea and I could see a few ways to expand upon it if your wanted to keep working: maybe increase the number of colours as the game goes on, or introduce enemies with two differently coloured parts to them (maybe a head that destroys them and legs that slow them down)? As it is though, its pretty fun.

One quality of life thing that would really help is being able to change colours with the keyboard (although this might decrease the difficulty slightly?)

The thought of a keyboard using it kinda destroys the underlying mechanic under it. Everything is supposed to be sorta frantic and quick. Thanks for the feedback :)
