Two Sides Shmup
Bullet hell, shoot-em up, yin and yang. Can you make it to the end? Can you get the high score?

Control your destiny in this bite-sized take on the classic shmup, Ikaruga.

Made in roughly 18 hours by Matthew Alan Estock and Drew Dunaj.

How to Play
Utilize your TwoSide ship's "color flip" ability to protect yourself! You are shielded from bullets that match your ship's color. Note: You are vulnerable to both colors when you for a brief moment while your ship switches!

Controls
  • Movement: WASD or arrow keys
  • Color Flip: Shift key
  • Start / Restart: Enter key
  • Quit Game: Escape key

Known Bugs

  • Collisions with other ships cause both ships to explode. However, collisions don't take player invulnerability into consideration. Oops!
  • Sometimes enemy ships will not fully leave the screen, which may lead to the victory condition not being met. Check around the left & right sides for any enemies that might not have left the play field. video

Enjoyed the game a lot, but at the end the ships stopped spawning - is that what denotes the end of the game? Wasn't sure if it bugged or not.

382654 Fairly good, I liked how the wave patterns were described by the lines and the noise they made when they came in were very retro.

All around very good, I appreciate the "Good luck" at the beginning which is a staple for the genre. Most importantly the gameplay was fun and fair. I like that there is a win scenario. Great job!

Thank you! I was recently on a Space Harrier kick, I'm glad my last-minute addition was worth it!

I don't really play these sorts of games outside of jams - but I had fun with this! Nice and polished. I like the path displaying before the enemies appear - I don't know if that's a normal thing? But, it's cool! Let's you plan ahead a bit.

Did seem to have issue with the colour change - I seemed to die even though I matched the colour. Happened on a reply too? So not sure what is going on there!

And of course some extra points for a bit of voice acting :D Good job!

I don't play shmups either, but I want to! Perhaps we need to develop one that's worth it 😉 The path being drawn is not a standard thing afaik, but I've seen other lesser-known shmups do it. I have an intentional delay before the new shield comes up, that might not have been clear enough. And thanks, did the voice-lines last minute haha.

This feels Really well done. I love it so much~~.
honestly my main complaint is that I want to play more of it.

I was so sad when the level ended, and the game was over. still a good job.

The idea is unoriginal, it's basically just a simple ikaruga. but you pulled it off well.

Also some music would go a long way.

    Keep up the good work!

Thank you! We definitely want to expand on it, but Drew's work on the encounter patterns really pulled it all together. I was working on music, but had to ditch and do real-life things haha.

A good bit of fun! Really enjoyed the simple palette and the smooth controls made my losses feel fair and completely my own fault. At times the enemy movement reminded me of something out of Fantasia and was begging for a classical music score.

Wow, great work! Thank you for the video! Do you mind if I use the video on the description? I've added you to the high score list as well!

The art is great and it feels really solid technically and mechanically. The color swapping works really well. I don't really play bullet-hell games, but it seemed like a very solid entry, especially for a game jam.

Thank you! To be honest, we don't play many bullet-hell games either. I feel lucky we pulled it off!
