Post-jam update!

Apr 19, 2022:  I've made a very small update to fix a couple of bugs with the painting mechanic! It's totally possible to learn to play around the bugs but it's kinda annoying, so I recommend trying out the updated version too, especially if you're looking to grind the leaderboard! Needless to say, should you rate the submission, you should rate it based on the original version.
You can find the updated version here: riuku.itch.io/paint-fast

This game is so fun. The game accels at the movement mechanics and it rewards repeated play. I think i could still improve by a lot. The Leaderboard is a fantastic idea. I tried beating arthurgps and I almost did ^^ For improvement, maybe have the rabbit paint in a certain location? If the animal paints below and Underpass we would get a better idea of the world it is in.

Thank you! I definitely had a few ideas in mind for an actual location and theme for the game but didn't have the time to include any of that stuff, as per usual :)

Cool game, I really liked the gameplay! The graphics work well, especially when taking into account that the paint sounds hard to make. The music isn't too distracting and with the tutorial, leaderboards and all this game feels really polished!

My only complaint is that, at least for me, controlling the rabbit was a little hard. But that's probably mostly an issue with my skills :) It is though kind of hard to control what areas you paint without planning really well the path from the start.

This is so cool! I think my only complaint that not one of the small bugs is that sometimes it's hard to switch color without painting a whole area you didn't want. But it might also be due to the fast that you can technically complete an area by backtracking, which made it a little hard to predict when or where line start. Other than that it's just a really well done game and a very fun idea.

This game was really cool, I felt myself compelled to go back and try to get a higher score on the leaderboards.

I ran into a lot of bugs when painting, though. Sometimes an area wouldn't be filled properly - usually this was fairly negligible, but eventually I developed the strategy of filling the level with one color of paint before filling in the other color, and half the time when I encompassed the whole space in a big square, a massive triangle of emptiness was inside of it. It can also be very finnicky when it comes to jumping/wall jumping since it doesn't allow for any margin of error in the shapes which can be pretty tiresome.

Other than that, the idea is great, the visuals are super clean, and the controls feel very polished. If anything I wish there were an untimed practice mode + a quick restart button just for quality of life when trying to climb the leaderboards, I got pretty sucked into it haha. Awesome entry!

I could tell this was an extremely well-polished game, with a really interesting take on the mechanics of games like Qix and Splatoon... but I could not, for the life of me, get anywhere close to feeling competent at it 😅 I was flailing up and down the walls getting spaghetti-fingered at the walljump, grappling hook and paint switching, and never got used to when and why the line I had drawn had magically disappeared before I could complete it.

Seriously impressive on multiple fronts, though. Extremely polished game engine that is impressive to have been made in gm48 - I could see it being used in a game of much bigger scope than this - with sturdy gameplay mechanics, a clear interactive tutorial, and heaps of polish. Online highscore integration was genius too. Thankfully my shame is hidden below the top 10!

Literally the only major weakness in this entire game was my sheer ineptitude at it. Fantastic work! 😆

Thanks a lot! There's some buggy stuff going on with the painting, which probably explains some of the magically disappearing lines unfortunately.

okay i really like this game. Painting walls has never been so much fun. Music is really catchy too. I managed to get top 3 on the leaderboard :)

I'm impressed that you were able to make a painting mechanic like that work. Wish I was better at controlling the character but it was fun to play anyway :)

Loved the idea. The controls take a bit to get use to, but the painting is pretty fun, though I feel the end point for the paint could stay on screen for a few more seconds and still be fine.

EDIT* so when I said "stay on screen for a few more seconds" I was under the impression the the paint had a time limit. after going back to play the game to better collect my thoughts I found that it dose not have a time limit for completing a area.

that said the reason I though it did was because the it was too easy to complete a small area by back tracking by accident. if you jumped in place, or slid down the wall to readjust your self the game will think you completed a small area and then all your progress was reset on the bigger area you were working on. that game me the impression the there was a time limit when there wasn't.

my suggestion is make the connecting line need to me at a angle at lest a little different, so micro adjustments can be made without destroying the line you made.

    hope this helps!

      Thank you!

I'm not quite sure what you're referring to with your suggestion of letting the paint stay on screen for longer. Would you mind elaborating a bit? (I'm kinda sorta thinking about working on this a bit more and publishing it on itch, which is why I'd love some detailed feedback)

An impressive entry and a really novel concept! Art and music were good and fit well together, and the gameplay was smooth and engaging. The tutorial was ideal; just enough to get started while letting the player figure out the strategy. I think the game length was perfect as well. The online leaderboard was a really nice addition too.

Incredible entry. I am very bad at the premise but I very much enjoyed it all the same. I was having difficulty with the paint-area completion but honestly it didn't matter too much because i was so bad at the game anyways. The game could have benefitted from a full screen mode (unless I am dumb and there was one but I didn't see it)- I had issues with clicking the window boarder and shaking it around and clicking outside the game.

The game reminded me of a Mario Party mini game, crossed with the arcade-y charm of Amazing Island's mini games. I loved the art style, the use of colors was incredibly well done and everything was sharp and easy to see. The music (especially the tutorial music) was giving me Wii Sports vibes. My only suggestion would be to add some kind of double jump or additional mechanic to help aid in mid-air percision.

    Very well done.

You actually can set it on fullscreen (Alt+Enter), but I forgot to communicate that within the game. Also double jumping is indeed possible. Thanks for pointing this out, I've added this info to the description!

I don't think I've played that Mario Party game but one of my inspirations for this game mechanic was this really old simple windows game I played as a kid but don't remember the name of! It starts with a "T" I think. In it you just moved around kinda like in Nokia Snake but when you connect to your own line it fills up the resulting polygon with your color. I wish I could find that game again!

      Thanks for the nice comment!

How did HappySquared get 94% on this?! Maybe I'm a simpleton but that is just unnatural skill! I enjoyed this one, quirky and fun, difficult to get to grips with and I will need to return to do another run on it because I was perhaps not always understanding when it would paint and when it would not, maybe my rabbit would benefit from a scissor lift instead of a hook 😅 but overall a solid entry, great job as always! :)

Thanks for the comment and the video! Glad to hear you enjoyed it!

The game is definitely intentionally difficult to master, but there are also a couple of bugs with the paint-connecting mechanic which I think probably caused confusion with some players. I've made a small post-jam update to fix this issue, in case some people want to continue grinding the leaderboards on it :)

I immedietly loved the game when I started playing it. The animations were smooth and the gameplay felt very fluid. Great job on the mechanics.

It did feel like my polygons weren't closing at first but once I got a hang of it, I quickly felt like a pro.

The game design here is amazing and I hope to see more projects from you soon.

Favorite part is the end screen and seeing how the different panels fit together.

      Thanks for the kind words!

The polygon-closing mechanic definitely has a couple of bugs that make it close too early or not close at all sometimes. But I think that once you get used to those quirks you can mostly bypass them, fortunately! I'm thinking I'll probably make a small post-jam update to fix those issues.

This felt like a really good Mario Party minigame without the multiplayer part. Does that even make sense? I don't know, but what it comes down to is that I really liked this entry. I felt the game was very easy to understand with room to improve as a player when getting used to the movement. Audio and graphics were solid too. Clever use of the theme. I'm always excited to play your entries and this one is no exception.

    Great job!!

Also, how the heck did Happysquared score so high!?!! I swear they have magic paint or something..

Thanks a lot! At some point in development I actually thought that this game mechanic might work quite well for a versus multiplayer game where you keep stealing each others' painted areas and after a time limit see who has the most coverage or something. But I ditched that idea because multiplayer is a hard sell in jam games :D If I ever continue developing this I might consider making a multiplayer mode!

Edit: I think this Crash Bash minigame was what I was thinking about! IIRC it has a similar area claming mechanic.

I think you can tell from my score that I liked your game very much and played it a lot. Only thing I'd have liked is a quick restart button so if I didn't do a level so well I can start from the beginning rather than opening and closing the game a lot.

Concept was really cool. I liked the feeling of the game as it was a challenge to keep control and paint in the shapes. But I was very enthralled by it and played for quite some time!

There were a few "bugs" maybe when sometimes I felt the shape wouldn't colour in or some odd triangles left uncoloured. But not a huge deal and don't think it affected my game that much.

Thank you! Yea unfortunately the shape filling feature has A TON of (very common) special cases that I didn't account for! I think I missed a lot of them because I had my own personal way of playing it and didn't happen to run into many of them on my own. Playing it now I'm running into them constantly though and it's genuinely annoying so I might make a small post-jam update to fix it so that anyone who wants to play more and grind highscores can play that version.
