About:

Down-Counter is a minigame-based game where you play as a countdown timer. There is a total of 6 minigames, all of which work on a basis of manually counting down to zero. Once you've completed the objective and your clock have reached 0, you can move on to the next minigame.

How to play:

Counting down - Numpad 8-0 (Just mess around with the numpad, you will figure it out!)

Movement - WASD

Interact - Mouse

Minigames:

  • INVADERS - Avoid the projectiles, survive until you reach zero.

  • INVADERS II - INVADERS but with different enemies.

  • INVADERS III - INVADERS but with different enemies.

  • BAKE A PIE - Put the pie in the oven with your mouse and count down until you think it is finished. It is about trial and error! (Hint: Count down around 32 times, it seems people got often stuck on this minigame)

  • MATH! - Answer the math questions correctly before counting down to zero.

  • TIME BOMB - Detonate the bomb before the bad guys get to it!

Attention!:

The sounds can be really loud! I advise you to turn down your volume a bit!

    • Whenever you make a game that relies mostly on the keyboard, avoid using the mouse for anything. Restarting with the mouse was unnecessary and annoying. At least add a key to allow us to restart at will (or if there is, the key was not obvious) The pie game was the only one requiring the mouse. Maybe it should have a way to be moved manually or more simply. Remember, our hands are both on the keyboard. We'd need a third hand to have them on the keyboard AND the mouse. Think about convenience
    • the countdown was kinda confusing. When changing the left digit you skip 9 (if you're at 20 for example, you'd expect to hit 0, then 9; in this game, it'll be 1, then 8, which is just weird)
    • as it was mentioned, the space invaders were mostly a "let's roll my fingers randomly on the keyboard" type of game
    • The pie game was really confusing. If it wasn't for the description/comments, I'd have 0 idea what I was supposed to do. I'd expect to remove the pie when the countdown is at 0, not in the middle of it, especially since we can't visually see how cooked is the pie. (or in a not noticeable way?)
    • While it is not a bad idea to use the numpad, keep in mind not every keyboards have them. At least offer the alternative to use the regular digits. I had a hard time trying to make my own numpad work...

That said, this was a very creative take on the countdown. I just love how you included it with the gm48 number as well! Pretty innovative. The problem was the execution.

Super neat concept! I included it in my GM48: Countdown compilation video series, if you’d like to take a look. :) https://youtu.be/2kFo5aya1ME

really liked the game here, really good idea and unique minigame style all using the same mechanics. Loved everything apart from the pie game (which was just a guessing game) but love the game overall, one of my personal faves

This is a very cool idea, but the controls are all over the place (numpad, wasd AND mouse ?) and it's really not clear what to do at times.

Like, the pie should just have some indication of its state of something. Here it's just testing different things without ever having any feedback on what was wrong (a simple "too much" or "not enough" would have helped A LOT). Overall, think about your game as something on its own, you shouldn't be required to read the description to be able to understand the most basic parts of it.

And for things with counter intuitive mechanics, try to have at least one person outside dev to try it without previous explanation, see where they're stuck.

Wonderful idea in theory! Slightly less so in execution.

Some of the mini-games were obtuse, basically requiring one to read their descriptions on this page while playing. I liked how the counting down worked in some of the slower paced mini-games, but the shooter levels quickly turned into just rolling my hand around the numpad and hoping it counts to 0 before I happen to touch an enemy :/

Speaking of which, how do you deal with people on laptops that don't have numpads?

      Thanks for the honest feedback!

I originally wanted to add some instructions in-game, but ran out of time. I thought that it wasn't that big of a deal and that the mini-games were fairly self-explanatory, but I see that's not the case!

By the way, I completely forgot that some laptops don't have a numpad, so I'm afraid you can't play the game without it.

I loved the concept and the artwork is awesome as well. I couldn't get past the pie in the oven, but I loved every second before that!

There's something oddly addicting about the way you have to decrease the timer to beat the mini-games. And I think you're on to something here. Maybe you could make it into a math game for kids who want to learn simple math problems?

Anyways, you did a great job & your game is one of the fun ones!

Edit: Ignore my idea about the math problems, I didn't notice you already implemented that :P

      Thank you for your feedback!

Just a small hint for the Bake a Pie minigame: Put the pie in the oven and then count down around 30 - 35 times. After that take it out. :)
