Would You Rather is a small game playable in an infinite (or at least more than 4) number of ways!

Explore the world, collect coins, and unlock new abilities. Every time, you will have a choice to make. It could completely change the way the game is played, but each ability is also tied to a side effect, so make you choice carefully. But don't worry too much, the will game is still beatable.

How to play

  • Move - Arrow Keys / ZQSD (we're fighting back 😈)
  • Action - Spacebar
  • Reset - R

The coins you pick up are only "saved" once you exit the level. If you have enough, you'll get a new ability, otherwise you'll be sent back to the start, and will need to find a few more coins. You also need a safe landing to get the coins you picked up in the air.

Also, you can't do much on the first run, don't worry!

Misc
Since a bunch of choices completely change the game, it was pretty hard to test every combination. I think I caught the majority of issues, but one thing I found 2 minutes after the deadline is a bug with a sound when a coin appears in a specific version of the game. Sorry, just pick them up quickly.

I was also adding features until the last hour (who knew 4+ games in one would be hard to do in 48h?!), so I didn't spend that much time on level design. But most of the main ideas and "jokes" are here, so there's that. In this state, the game is fully playable no matter your choices (except for that thing that's intended), and there might only one or two coins that you can't get depending on your abilities, but it's not necessary to beat the game.

    Feedback as I play:

    • Really need a heads up on what's going on cause I really thought the game was broken at first. If it wasn't for the feedback comments, I would have kept thinking that. Just a "you can't do much at the beginning, it's normal don't worry", or something along those lines. Just to avoid the confusion in the beginning, even if it was intended
    • Coins can't be immediately picked up... which can make you miss one from talking to an npc if you go too quick
    • Not sure what the checkpoint does? When I die/restart it still spawns me wherever I leaped from
    • The gravity reverse is buggy. The first time I used it, it made a constant "landing" sound and made me unable to reverse it again, making me stuck. It did it again later after using it a couple of times.
    • AH! Joke's on you, I speak french! ...I just couldn't figure out what the guy at the bottom was saying though.
    • I wish there was music cause it's the only thing missing for me

    Feedback after playing:

That is a very cool and innovative idea! I love that it works well and it makes every gameplay unique! It really makes you wanna try all possibilities, and makes it funny when you take an option and realize "...oh yeah, why did I think this would be useful". Very cool twists, I'd LOVE to see that turned into a complete game, however short it could be, but this needs to be made into a bigger project! It's kinda like the Henry Stickmin games, it's a cool concept where you get to experience choices and it's what makes the gameplay fun! For me, that's an A in innovation and A in theme! Perfect way to implement the theme. :)

Thanks for the kind words! I really liked the idea but I'm not sure I'd know what to do for a more full game.. probably an extreme amount of time on level design. who knows maybe one day.

Yeah, the confusion definitely isn't intended, that's a time constraint thing + not realizing how confusing it was.

There might be a few bugs with checkpoints... Restarting should bring you back to the start, but running dying (running out of hearts) brings you back to the checkpoint. I fixed this towards the end so maybe there was I mix up with the build uploaded... 😬

Same for the reverse gravity, I'm not sure what happened, I fixed a bunch of things and didn't see anything like that, but it's apparently not that rare so I must have missing something big.

And that dude at the bottom is technically speaking English with a very French accent 😅

Cool concept done in simplistic way with a few gameplay bugs. Not bad all in all.

This is an awesome concept! Really love how stripped back you start off and then get to pick your poison with each powerup. Some unique combinations there - I always tended towards "irritating sound/graphics over confusing mechanics" and feel I made the right choice, but I could see trying it again with different combinations would produce some really unique results.

One thing confused me a little - when I got to the finish the third time, I didn't have the coins to buy anything yet, but upon going through it anyway, I miraculously gained the ability to melee attack with seemingly no consequences. Not sure if that was designed or just a glitch!

      Thanks!

Sounds like a bug, yeah. I mean, it's possible to get enough coins from previous rounds, but you should still be able to choose 🤔 and the melee attack should come with enemies attacking you (nothing's free here 😈)

What a clever idea. I included it in my GM48 compilation video series, if you’d like to take a look. :) https://youtu.be/gQOVaoF4Jeg

At first I thought the game was broken since I accidentally skipped through the first choice dialogue, choosing the option where coins don't do anything. Restarted and discovered an intriguing and charming little game. Particularly with french NPCs because why wouldn't that be the option to choose...even if one of them's a phony? Anyway, gameplay's good, graphics on the poorish side but they work, same with the sound. Music would've been nice though. Theme was there with each choice having a tradeoff.

This was really entertaining and had a creative list of choices. You used the theme really well.

Yep, this is the most unique game I've played so far. Took me a while to realize I couldn't just jump right away lol. The idea of picking an option with a side effect was pretty well implemented and the gameplay and humor make up for the art. Pretty nice game!

I think this game has some good ideas and some explanation beforehand would make all the difference. It was a fun concept making a choice at the end of each run but maybe it needed to start after I could already collect a coin, because I chose collecting pictures just to see what would happen and it killed my run immediatley 😅 some overall fun ideas in here, just a little rough around the edges in some parts, not a bad job though :)

Ahah, the idea made me laugh so it had to stay in, but yeah there's an overall lack of explanation that I wish I had the time to fix, because it's not supposed to be particularly obscure this time 😅

      Thanks for the feedback!

That was possibly the weirdest experience I had so far, very well done! Only one small issue I had, but it's just personal opinion, the small "frozen" state the player gets after dying can be very confusing and disorienting at first, and it made me die a few times, but otherwise it's fun!

      Thanks :)

Yeah this part was quickly thrown in pretty late, so the freeze was a quick fix to avoid falling multiple times in the same spikes. It doesn't feel great but at least it was easy 😅

I don't have a french keyboard, but Im sure the people who utilize this configuration will enjoy this. It made playing the game awkward, because I had to position my wrist differently, and bunch up my fingers. Regardless, mechanics were fun, so good luck!
