Karmasutra Is a small game made in 48 hours. It's about surviving against previous recordings of yourself. The longer you live the more copies there are, so be careful.
WASD : move
Mouse : aim
Left click : shoot
Shoot the opposing team! But be wary, as every choice is recorded and will inevitably return to haunt you; don't be mean.

There are a lot of top down shooters in jams, but this is for sure one of my favorite. You did an amazing job on this. Reminded me of the recent game Quantum League when I managed to kill a recording early enough that he couldn't kill the rest of my "team" :D
Like others have said, the text can be a little hard to read, and the optimal strat is to wait (which isn't fun so I didn't really do it), but I also understand not putting a timer, and I think letting people explore the mechanics at their own pace in a jam game is definitely a plus. Finding a way to make the game more engaging and incentivise aggression would be a interesting challenge though.
But seriously the artstyle and all those gun variation didn't even need to be this good!

I played your game in stream and I think it has nice graphics and overall execution. Of course the best strategy is 'boring' way, thinking much of ahead just executing your plan carefully. It is much more fun not planning and just shooting. But because game is built upon 'gimmick', it is shortlived and there is not much of gameplay value after couple of runs.

As others mentioned, you can "cheese" it by just timing things so you never get hit. But that's boring. But so is the end concept of the game really, as you don't seem to do anything new beyond different gun variations. Art was great though :)

I hate to be negative here but I encountered a major flaw in the gameplay early on. The player can just go to the same location and shoot in the same direction and it is impossible to lose under any circumstance. The concept is really cool and the artwork/shaders look amazing.

Thank you.
What do you mean? like there's a spot where you're invincible? Or do you mean that by taking turns you can just win slowly? If the later, we've working on a post jam version where there's a timer, so hopefully that fixes it.

Basically winning slowly by walking up directly behind the previous clone and taking the next shot from the same position and direction. I think Heather explained it better than I did with the term "cheesing it". I totally understand that with a game like this 48 hours isn't enough to implement a complete set of anti-cheesing counter tools but cheesing aside it's really well done. The timer will probably be enough to fix that

this is a REALLY cleverly made game, I can't find a thing wrong with the gameplay itself, beautiful shaders and graphics, well made and well designed, my literal only tiny bug-bear with it is that the shaders make reading the text a little tough, it looked like it said "f▓ for fullscreen", but that's a very, very minor thing, great job!

When I saw the icon of this game, I thought "Wow, that looks like hyperlight drifter". Your art assets are amazing!
I enjoyed the effects though maybe they were a tad much at some points as it made the text harder to read. Theme wise, it felt a little shaky to me.
Love the concept of the game. I thought it was interesting. Though you can cheese it, I do like the bullet hell feel if you just go all out. The whole game screen looks amazing with all the bullets flying all over the place! Cool, unique game.

Our artist truly is amazing, and delightful to work with!
We had to make a lot of difficult decisions during development. Considering the time limit, we had to focus on some things more than others, and implementing a system to counter cheesing sadly was something we didn't have time for.
We're super happy to receive your feedback, it means a lot <3

I think you dealt with the time crunch well! You were able to show off a really cool concept. Time well spent!

No way! We got the same idea. I also made a topdown shooter were you play againts past recordings of yourself. What are the odds?
I want to know how you got this idea. I don't think I have seen anything like this before, and it isn't at all an obvious interpretation of the theme. I got the basis of the idea when I tried to come up with an idea for the theme "Clones".
Despite having the same idea, you pulled it off much, much better than me and my team. The art looks astounding and the soundeffects fit very well. Though the gameplay got quite boring once I realized the best stratedgy is staying in one corner, waiting until the battle is over. The gameplay then became about patience. I got to loop 30 before I gave up. I fixed this issue simply by adding a timer, but you could be more creative, like shinking the battlefield or making other hazards to avoid.

Thank you so much
I think we started with the idea of a bullet-hell where you had to play against yourself, replaying the stage having to dodge your own bullets. We kept iterating on the idea, trying to change it to prevent predicted issues. eventually we came to the idea current idea, which we went with.
We know the game is very exploitable. there's a hundred and one ways to cheese it. waiting/walking away/waiting in turn/"making a train" completely breaks it.
We decided not to have a timer since we didn't want to overwhelm the player and weren't quite sure what would make for an intuitive punishment. We had quite a few ideas for incentivizing aggression, but since its just a jam we figured most people just wouldn't notice.
Anyways I'm glad you liked, thanks so much for the kind words.

This is so cool and unique. The gameplay is intuitive and interesting. I really love the art and presentation. My only gripe is that some of the text is hard to read.
Great work!

This is incredible. The winner of the jam for sure. I'd love to know how you're recording all the player movement, is it an .ini file? Just saving the path? Very novel and incredibly well done. Some serious potential here.

While controlling the character some of your data gets saved to an array every 4 frames or so. I think it's your x/y/sprite_index/shooting direction/are you shooting. The replay just runs trough the array.
It's actually pretty simple, though I'm sure there are ways of doing it that are 100 times better.

Holy cow! How innovative! It's amazing that this game mimics your own playstyle, so people like myself who prefer more slow-paced games have a great experience, and people who enjoy faster-paced games will have a great time as well! The art, music, and entire aesthetic of the game were just superb. I would prefer if the text were a bit less distorted and easier to read, but that is my only suggestion! Fantastically well executed. Great job!
