On the Flip Side

It's a rogue-like card game, where each of your cards is actually 2 different cards in one

Idea

Strongly inspired by Slay the Spire. The idea was born the second after I saw the theme

Theme

The cards are two-sided, sometimes the opposite sides have literally the opposite effects

"Story"

You're a mage, seeking for the secret of True Ending. Everyone says that you'll never reach your goal, that it's impossible... But you'll still try

To be serious, no real story, gameplay is the core of the game

NOTE: Due to a weird error, pressing the red button in the final ending choice leads to game crash, so consider the "GG" ending the true one
Content

7 Different cards (out of 14 planned)

4 vErY uNiQuE eNeMiEs with different stats (Green Slime, Pink Slime, Blue Slime, Black Slime)

It's time to start making jokes about recolored slimes being the only enemy in the game because I had no time to draw something else, I promise it'll be funny

MODDING!

It may seem very weird, but I configured the file system in such a way, that anyone can modify the /Cards folder and insert new cards/replace behaviour/sprite of old ones and make the game completely unbalanced just for fun.

Of course if anyone will actually bother looking into my messy code and dive into how things work

P.s. sorry guys, you won't be able to compile the project unless you own the GMLive.gml extension (I cut it from the files because YellowAfterLife is a good person and I don't want to just give away his work)

That being said, every other script from this project (e.x. ArrayClass() or SetTimeout() ) that you find useful, you can freely copy, I don't mind (I'd be happy actually if my work was helpful for someone else)

The music is as loud as preparation is OP >:( Really make sure to test your sound at least at 50% global sounds if you're always at something like 10 or 15%

I loved the idea of flipping cards to get opposite effect. It's very simple but it takes away the frustration of having only heal when you're full health and only attacks when you're about to die. In the end the game might be a little easy but for a jam I think it's fine, and you still had some small combos in there that were fun to discover.

I stacked my deck with preparation and that card that adds a crystal. Then I could make pretty much every combat last as long as I wanted, so that I could heal before unleasing all those big attacks. Too bad that the damage times 2 only worked on the first attack instead of all 5.

I did encounter a bug with a red slime. On the combat with that slime that does 50 damage (3rd one from the end I think), I killed it with the one shot card, and after that the red slime would not take any turn.

I liked this game, made me think. making a card game with actual strategy in 48 hours is really awesome.

my strat wasn't the exact same as the ones below but I did use water splash and preparation a lot and the mana crystal as well.

    well done :D

Ah man, this is cool. I really enjoyed playing this.

I may have also used the baku strat... but it was still fun!

It's missing sound, of course, but I'm sure that was down to lack of time.

Also noticed that the '-1 mana' status effect didn't stack (intuitively I thought it would).

I didn't understand what the card about losing hp equal to enemy health was about.

This feels like an idea you could spend a couple years to flesh out, polish, and sell! (Just try not to look like a StS clone, of course :D)

PS. I uploaded a video of my playthrough

Thanks a lot! About the -1 effect: how do you thought it'd stack? Like decrease the next card by -2 or applying -1 to next two cards? I've already made It so that 0 mana cards don't trigger it.

That card called "Darkness" kills an enemy and forces you to take damage equal to its health

I'm actually working on a full version of this, even though I'm only intending to spend on it a month or so. btw I'm actually posting daily devlogs on my twitter

P.s. I watched the video, old "Preparation" may or may not be way too busted

I like the idea a lot, and it's very fun to play, but unfortunately I discovered the game is completely broken - I stumbled upon a way to go infinite and win against any enemy (if you're a little lucky).

Basically it's a combo between the cards Preparation and Water Armor / Water Splash. These cards are completely OP. To set up the infinite combo you play Preparation, and hope to draw Water Armor. Play Water Armor and hope to draw Preparation + something else. If a Preparation draws another Preparation, you can just play that again. Do this enough times until all cards in your deck that are not one of these two cards are in your hand. Now you can play Preparation followed by Water Splash forever, since they'll go to the discard pile and then back into your deck when you try to draw from the empty deck. With each cycle you'll deal 5 damage to an enemy. Rinse and repeat until you win that fight. And of course you can use the combo to heal to full whenever you want as well.

Here's footage of when I discovering the combo.

I went and played the game a second time to make sure it wasn't a fluke. After the first fight I picked Water Armor, and after the second fight I picked Preparation. In the third fight I managed to pull off the combo, so it's very easy to get going if you're a little lucky about which cards you get.

Oh my god, that's brilliant! I was considering some crazy combos with preparation+draw, but never thought it'd be a stable strat, that is able to go infinite. I'll patch that out in the next version (I think it's fun, but needs to be a lot less consistent) Thanks for playing and finding this exploit

That music is way too loud, you must have not lowered the volume before exporting it from Beepbox. Fun card game having a heal/damage effect for each cards :)

I did stream 4 days ago, where I played the game and commented, but to say shortly here too. It was nice card game and I liked the card flipping idea. Usually in card games other side is back to hide contents, therefore you can't as easily make 'flipping' game mechanic with real-life cards. Now, graphics need bit work, as game had pretty static images they don't need to be pixel art, but maybe hand-drawn etc. I think raters respect people who try other than pixel art games, as they are usual art style with GameMaker.

Hey! Thank you so much, watching other people play my game is always a lot of fun! Sorry for the music tho :( A friend of mine said he'll write some proper soundtrack

      I'll work on the art.

Btw there's a slightly improved version with more visual feedback+attack animations+balance changes (now hp restores)+a few more brutal slime encounters+SFX here: https://evoleo.itch.io/flip-side

P.s. you can mute music with M (that's what I usually do)

That mana crystal one can get pretty busted if you don't start the match at low health haha. The art is a bit o the rougher side, adn the window resolution is not doing any fvors to the text in particular, but I do love me some nice card synergies, and cost reward systems, allowing me to choose a slower safer style or just go all out on damage (personally I chose the latter and that's why my run ended :p) A bit more visual feedback on the attacks on either side would've been nice since it's a bit easy to miss what happened, but the idea is nice and the game is fun.

This has been one of my favorite games this game. Unfortunately I ran into the bug after clicking 'let me die'. I wa sbasically industructible after a certain point so I would have liked to experience the more difficult battles. Overall it was really well done and had me wanting more.

This is a really clever concept on a card game, I really like it - and to see you've gone the extra mile with modding possibilities as well, genius! I think a little polish on the graphics is needed but if you continue with this project post jam then I'd be really interested to see what else you develop with this, really great job! :D

I played the game so far that I got the let me die/gg message. I chose the “let me die” option and after placing the next card the game crashed. I don’t know if it should have been expected with the selected option but it was still a bit unwished ending.

Still the time before the ending was very enjoyable! The difficulty was suitable for me and I think the card balance was great. After figuring things out UI worked pretty well for its purpose. I could have easily played longer time without the crash/with more content.

Character and card arts were nice though I wished there were more variation in enemies (as you pointed out in description 8) ). Background music played out quite badly in its repetitiveness after playing a while. Maybe some sound effects could have made it feel fresher for a longer time?

Thanks for feedback and the kind words!

The crash wasn't intended, there should've been 2-3 more difficult encounters after that and then the true ending screen.

However, I didn't have time to test it (it takes a while to get that far), so I just submited it as it is (after the deadline I found out this bug is a thing, but I couldn't do anything with it).

In general I think I way overscoped and barely got a more or less playable build in time, without much polish.

Probably I'll expand the game a bit after the jam, add some more content+juice (SFX/VFX) and release it on itch.

Let me know if you're interested :D

This was so much fun. As someone who enjoys playing actual card games a lot, this idea is something that I have never seen, and only really works in a video game. As a deck builder, this works so well. Very good job here!

Thanks! <3 I was playing some card games myself (irl and online) and was inspired mostly by MTG and Slay the Spire. (In fact, MTG has the flipping cards in one of their sets, but those work completely differently)

This is a good idea that I had a lot of fun with. The zero cost card that gives you card draw and either heal or damage is really busted. I mainly chose to get that and growth and I could expend half my deck every other turn with all the mana and card draw I had, it became mindless fun just dragging everything up indiscriminately

    KILL JUICE

I was on vacation when gm48 happened and I should say,

making card games is pretty fun

I got a lot of stuff wrong, but I think it was pretty good considering I worked alone and had no experience in making card games whatsoever Probably it could've been much better if I found an artist guy (so that the game doesn't look like ass)
