You've booked a train ride to Washington, but the closest ride was from Haybrook Town. On your road there, you were robbed and, more importantly, you lost your ride. The next train is in a week and you will somehow have to survive until then. One of your friends lended you ten bucks, but it won't be enough for the entire week. You will have to start gambling. And winning.

THE RULES ARE SIMPLE: -Rock beats Scissors. -Paper beats Rock. -Scissors beat Paper. -Bandage beats only itself, loses against everything else. -Gun beats everything, but loses against itself.

You can also press the keys 1-5 on your keyboard to select the corresponding tool.

Full version coming out (not so) soon! Keep up to date with the itch.io page: https://nnnikki.itch.io/haybrook

Very nice graphics! I included it in my GM48: Countdown compilation video series, if you’d like to take a look. :) https://youtu.be/XYfIcuyIYDU

It's called "rock paper scissors" for a reason. Any well of gun of stuff like that will make the game unbalanced. There's absolutely no reason to use anything else than the gun, it's not even game theory here, 4/5 is greater than 1/5. The balance is made even worse since there are multiple opponents at once.

AND even if the AI was thinking and using the gun because of the better odd, the best strategy is STILL to use the gun, since nothing can beat it (making the bandage beat the gun would have helped a little, that wouldn't have been balanced, but at least there would be some strategy and counter strategies involved).

Technically, you could have a balanced variant of the game with any number of option (well, at least an odd number of options), but it becomes ridiculous and ends up looking like that https://qph.fs.quoracdn.net/main-qimg-7455827f0d177000efb9257893c113ae-c only to have the same kind of result as having only the 3 options.

Other than that, you can't really tell which option you selected ingame (I mean, before you play your hand), which is really disappointing since it's the only real interaction in your game :(

The concept is really cool though, I wish there was more stuff to do.

I realized all of this stuff after making the game. In the beginning, one of my teammates disappeared and I panicked and didn't really focus on game design much. I will take this to mind when making the full version, though.

I really liked the art and music. However like others have said, you can just choose the gun and win. In my opinion it would've been better if you removed the bandage and gun and just let it be the classic rock paper scissors. Or maybe add more items that counter each other, or make the money reward from the gun low, and from the bandage high. Another thing that wasn't clear in the beginning was that it was selected to rock by default, I was waiting for a screen to let me choose what I want to play that round, but instead I rolled rock for the entire day.

Ultimately, the player will always pick the best option for winning. Which is... 5. Since it relie on luck, 5 was the only way to actually do something fruitful. And the whole design of the game crumbles because of it.

That said, it's off putting, but cool to see real pictures in the game. (although arguably allowed? I am not sure) It has some kind of beat which isn't bad. Although at the end of the day... it's just rock scissors and paper. And OP gun.

    Not bad overall though!

When making this game, I already had an idea that I made long long ago. However, because of the time limitations, I couldn't really make good AI or random events to make your life harder. I realized that the gun is OP too late, and couldn't make any changes. Thanks for the feedback, though. I promise that the full version will be better.

Loved the music and sound! I found the real-world graphics to be off-putting at first, but once I got used to them I found them charming.

One thing though: If you just choose pistol, it's almost impossible to lose.

    Nice work!

The concept to this game was definitely interesting, and the art and music were pretty well done. But when it's all said and done, the gameplay was pretty empty and grating.

There's no reason to pick any option other than 5, and because of that the game ends up becoming a dull cycle between watching four hands appear on screen a few times and then clicking a few buttons just to rinse and repeat.

It would be interesting to see where a game like this could be taken if there was more incentive to actively play, and possibly if it gained the possibility for skill to be involved rather than just random chance.

Thanks for the feedback! I was planning on a bigger game with more depth, better AI, random events, but due to the amount of time given I wasn't able to implement any of these. For now, I just wanted to have a head start.

To be honest, the game play wasn't the most amazing, I noticed an issue where even when going into negative money, you still win the game. For example i could still buy food to survive with 0 dollars and i'd just go into the negative.

Despite that I found the atmosphere made by the music to be quite enjoyable, with, like what gartman said " an authentic western feel " which also had a comedic nature.

Definitely worth a play and hopefully will get good reviews.

I love the atmosphere in this game. Its an authentic western feel but also very comedic with the full cutout picture of hands. The music is catchy and authentically western feeling while retaining the jaunty upbeat nature of chiptune music.

The actual game however, is just rock paper scissors with an extra "beat the game" option added. Admittedly, i felt like that one kid everyone knew in school, but i got through the whole game just using gun every single time. Unless more than one opponent also use gun, you still end up with a net gain so there's no risk. Hypothetically if you could reason with the opponents you could all make money using bandage but obviously you can't.

All in all a fun time though, would recommend for spending a solid 10 minutes.

Nice but too easy. I'll start with the less good points so we have an happy end :) I've found that your version of "rock paper scissor" is unbalanced and the gun is the best way to earn money quickly. I also noticed that we get easily over 30 dollars and the costs are very low so it's not very challenging. Well, done for the negative parts pfiouuu... The music is just awesome. This theme turned into 8-bit style is very very nice. I would listen to it all day long :D The pixel art is beautiful too so the game looks clean. In general the menus, game over screens, ... looks very clean. To me the theme is respected and I've got a lot of pleasure to play with your game. :)

Making this game was a bit of a challenge, because when the jam started, one of my team members went to a wedding or something and I thought that I was left alone for this job. Luckily, he returned the day after and we could finish it. I really like his art and the game would be much worse without his help. That being said, the game was an idea since a long time, but I just got around to making it for this jam. The original was supposed to have 4 weeks of gameplay, but I decided to go with a shorter time. Overall, I think that this is a great building space for the full version and I was really impressed with what we could make. PS A common complaint I hear is that it's boring and easy. That will be fixed. Eventually.
