The noblest of all games and the simplest of card games have joined forces in a 2D fighter of epic proportions! Burly chess pieces vie for dominance in a game of wits and agility and cards. The chess pieces have been working out for many moons to gain such muscle, and now it's time to use said muscle to throw down some cards. Cards will be thrown. Arms will be flexed. The flexing of the arms will be mostly equivalent to that of the legs. All the limbs will be clad in different colors, unless they're clad alike. Oh, it will be garish. These are some really intimidating chess pieces. You probably haven't been intimidated by chess pieces as intimidating as these chess pieces. They're not just intimidating for their garish dress and enviable symmetry, but also for their skill and cunning when it comes to throwing those cards. They can throw them pretty far. They can also catch cards. They can catch them, and naturally those caught cards can be used as a health of sorts. A balm, if you will. Not a balm, though. The number of cards the player has dictates that player's health. Unless that's what balm means, it's not a balm, but rather a mechanic by which this digital contrivance functions. Whosoever has the most cards at the end of 60 seconds wins the round, and whosoever wins 2 rounds wins the game. If one is to find oneself bereft of all cards, one shall find oneself at a loss. Hopefully, for one's sake, the other one has not won more than 1 round. Otherwise, it's back to the roster screen to choose a new fighter, complete with garish dress. Unless it is not garish. Perhaps it is austere. Regardless, it is intimidating. And that is how to play the card game known simply as "War."

Very unique game! I included it in my compilation video series of all of the GM48 games, if you’d like to take a look. :) https://youtu.be/UEdGTFt7opw

Hey, thank you so much! It's such an honor to be included in your videos, and I really, really appreciate the support. Thanks again!

Reminds me a lot of photo dojo for the nintendo ds, which was a great game. I didn't play this game with anyone else so my experience is probably not ideal, but i still liked the idea, even without experiencing the intended gameplay.

Fun game, the character select screen was a nice touch. The biggest problem is when cards collide, I couldn't figure out the logic behind it, as sometimes the lowest card won, and it didn't seem to be affect by who shot first or last.

Thanks so much for the feedback. Basically the logic was the higher card wins (and Ace is just a 1), but I think what's happening is the cards fly out from the sides based on the player's starting side rather than their current side, which makes it look like the lower card wins sometimes. Anyway, I'll try to tidy that up. Thanks again!

I couldn't really play the game very well I has I didn't have anyone to play with, but it seems like it could be some silly fun. I like the crazy visual style, though some of the sound effects are a bit grating.

Yeah, I gotta step up my sound effects game. Thanks for giving it a try and for the feedback. If you're interested, the itch.io page has a version with some basic but effective AI.

Kinda fun! I wish it was a bit more polished though, but fun nonetheless.
It has a bit of bugs, sometimes, a 5 beats a 10 and things like these.

Yeah, that's weird. I gotta figure out what's going on there. Thanks so much for the feedback, and I'm glad you had fun!

I was totally enthralled. It was awesome. But I have no friends in my office right now, so I had to play war solitaire. That's the weakest link, one player mode, I must have it.

Thanks for the feedback! Check out the html version over here https://jamblefoot.itch.io/super-chess-card-wars for some deepmind AI action (not really. It's a bit buggy, but it was able to beat me, which seemed good enough for the short term.)

Good fun if a little frustrating at times but that is more a polish issue. It might be nice to have the card reveal before you play it, so you know if you want to straight attack the other card or go over/under it for a chance to win the hand.

Awesome, thanks for the feedback. The card reveal was deliberate, as in the card game "War" you just have to throw the card down and what you get is what you get. Instead of that hard reveal, I compromised with the ability to hold the card for a few seconds, allowing some time to decide on a course of action, but I know what you're saying. Thanks again!

This was ridiculous, and I loved every minute of it. At first I thought it was some turn-based deal where you throw cards at each other, but then it dawned on me: War! Duh! It was pretty cool, although there was a time where Player 1 threw a 6, and Player 2 threw a 10, and Player 1 won that bout, which I thought was odd.
Really great submission, loved it!

Thanks! I'm really glad to hear that. That is very odd, and I'll have to playtest it more to see if I can recreate that. Frankly, I'm a bit surprised there haven't been more issues, and I've been worrying about this very thing.
Was it during one of those duels where the bigger cards fly in from the side of the screen (btw they were gonna get he-man limbs, too)? Cause those come out relative to the player's starting side rather than the current position, which can be confusing. Anyway, that's the only other explanation I can think of beside bad maths, which is also entirely possible.
Anyway, thanks again!

Nice implementation of the theme.
The fighting mechanics are also really good, we had a lot of fun :)

It's quite interesting. I initially thought it was a bit ridiculous but the fighting mechanics were actually okay.
I like how you can absorb the cards thrown by the enemy by throwing one of your own.

The fighting mechanics are really cool, I would play this as a full game! The balance between blocking, dodging and different types of attacks work really well. It would be helpful to have the full controls listed (we didn't figure out holding the button until the second match) and I would avoid using the shift key (for StickyKeys reasons).

Thanks so much! Glad to hear it feels balanced, cause I had very little time to play test. Yeah, that player 2 attack button has been tricky. Hoping to figure out the button mapping and try using controllers soon.
