"Skaart! I'm happy you're here! Please help us!"
Skaart comes to the rescue with the Slot Gun, a gun capable of inflicting devastating blows... if you manage to get the lucky hit. His weapon is useful, but sometimes hurts more than it helps.
Your goal is to go through the forest while using your Slot Gun to kill the haunted trees. The catch is that the gun's bullets are tied to a slot machine, so you have to shoot at the right time to have the appropriate effect. Remember, the Slot Gun is helpful... but it may also be harmful!

THE CLOCK, THE FINAL BOSS OF GAME JAMS
Oh I wish I had just a bit more time! I spent most of the jam setting a base to the mechanics and elements of the game, but as the clock was ticking, I was unable to apply it. I had several other bullet (or Slotties ) effects idea. (such as a healing bullet, melee bullets, crazy but dumb effects - like transforming the enemy into a frog) Adding a bit more enemies, and obviously, more content. I made all the (playable) rooms in the last couple of hours.
I hope you will (or did) enjoy your experience with Skaart, although it's not very finished. It was really fun an satisfying to make (especially the art and sound effects). Each GM48, I feel like I go further! I haven't made the "feat" I made back with The Ascension but I try to add more gameplay into the mix! My scope was a bit too big this time around.
I still hope you like my new baby. ♥

Lovely graphics! I included it in my compilation video series of all of the GM48 games, if you’d like to take a look. :) https://youtu.be/po4FqYmf9EQ

I like the idea of the slot gun on paper a whole lot, but in practice it falls a little flat. It would be cool if you could somehow influence the slots you get, maybe even with some kinda deckbuilding-like mechanic? So you could pick and choose which slotties to "equip" into the slot gun instead of it being random? I don't remember what you've said about how you want to take this further, maybe you've already thought about that idea haha in which case ignore this lol
So all in all, content, and to an extent gameplay, is obviously lacking in this jam version, but I mean, at least it's real pretty~~

Well this is exactly how I intend to take it further. :p The post-jam will be almost identitcal; the full game however will have way more control over the slot, but you won't build it "easily". I imagined it as a rogue-like where you can take "packs" of effects, with way more positive effects (cause as much bombs as bullets is bad)
The idea excited me so I wanted the slot machine mechanic to be perfect and that slowed me down for the rest

Feels more like a proof of concept, but it's looks and sounds sooo good! (except for the spirits sound which I kinda hated, definitely too loud compared to the music)
There seems to be some stability issues though? I had the game slow down on shots/hits, and in full screen the game runs half as slow for some reasons.
Edit: I'll check again later

Yeah the spirits are way too loud...
As for the stability issues, that seems weird to me. I don't have a very good computer and never had any trouble nor did i get reported any. (Also the game is at 30 fps so i see even less reason for it to lag) you sure it's not from your end? If not, i'd like to investigate, but not sure what would cause the issue hmm

This is a really cool idea that seems like it has a lot of potential. I can imagine a customisation or upgrade system where you can unlock abilities and add/remove them to/from the list of slots in your gun. However, in the game's current state it feels like too much of a hassle to actually use the gun. Most of the enemies can be ran past (it doesn't help that the movement speed is a bit too high), they take a long time to kill and you get nothing for doing so.
The visuals are great (obviously). The parallax background effect is very cool and the characters are well designed and animated. There's a lot of polish overall (perhaps a bit too much considering that effort could have been spent on more content). The music and sound effects are also well done. I particularity like the death theme.
PS: I like how elegantly you combined the GM48 and Ludum Dare themes. I've seen a couple of games on here that were clearly primarily made for LD but yours works well for both.

Yep, I intended to add more items but ran out of time. The base code was there, all I needed was to add them. With about 2 hours more, I think a big difference would have been made. :T
About Ludum Dare, it was actually a lucky accident. I had this idea before the theme of Ludum Dare was published and it was fitting its theme so I went on with it. (I always put priority on the gm48)
Thanks for your feedback :)

This game is really beautiful, as expected of you as the amazing artist you are. The gameplay is really nice but sometimes I felt a lack of bullets on my slots, making it very difficult to shoot an enemy. Besides that, I really had fun. Great work!

Fantastic art and sound, animations are really beautiful.
It's a pity that you couldn't add more content.

Well, if I didn't spend so much time on the fantastic art and sound and really beautiful animations, maybe I could have added more content! :D (to be fair though, i spent a lot of time on code that should have been way shorter but... yeah coding isn't my speciality so I learn while I do)
Thanks for your feedback!

The art and animation were excellent and I really liked the idea of the slot gun (obviously, it would be cool to have more effects!) The sound the spirits make is adorable as well :) I need to go learn how to make parallax scrolling backgrounds now...

10/10 Art as always, even though the game feels a bit too short and lacking in level design

I found the gameplay mechanics pretty interesting until I realized that you can complete the game just by heading straight forward. I even finished the game without using the gun nor taking damage.
The jumping feels a bit loose. Maybe a bit more gravity would make it feel better.
Very nice graphics. I mean, I take it for granted by now. The sound and atmoshere is also very nice. Keep it up!

Hellow!
Yeah, the playable rooms have been added in the last moments of the jam, so I didn't get to take care of these types of balance. Additionally, it also allowed me to breeze through the levels to check if everything worked as intended. (but not taking damage considering the trees need a ledge to be jumped over? Nice!)
Oh yeah. I figured the whole movement had something weird; I usually make my characters jumping slowly in the air to help with platform.. obviously, this bad habit had nothing to do here since you're not supposed to embrace the acrobatics of the forest, that is rather horizontal!
Thanks for your feedback!

I enjoyed this entry! I think the slot-machine gun was very original and fit the theme really well. The art is amazing and the sound is great as well!
The gameplay itself is certainly original and satisfying to a degree, however I feel like if the delay before and after the slot machine appears was smaller, it'd feel a lot better. I would also like to see more items in the slot machine, but I understand you ran out of time. The game is definitely fun though, I really like the idea.
In summary, I think this entry nailed the theme the best out of the ones I've played so far and it looks and sounds beautiful!

Heya, thank you for your feedback!
About thee delay, yes I've been told. The thing is, it was my best way to deal with an annoying bug I had to deal with. The delay could be improved a bit though, I'll give you that! Also yes I actually intended to have more items, some even with crazy effects. I had every base covered to add that!
And thank you for the nice comment!

This is a fantastic game that I feel really embraced the theme. The art was excellent, gameplay was enjoyable. I would hope that at a future time the coins may have some impact on the game rather than just to make it more difficult. I eagerly look forward to your continuation of this project.

You have a place in my heart for sure!!!! :) haha Fantastic Jam game! Excellent use of the "sign post" too. I went with the old fashion DRAW GUI and hated it but ran out of time to change it. You nailed the theme for sure. I think I killed myself 15 times before reaching the end. :) It would have been awesome to have a "death" counter at the top next to your health. Like how many times a player died before reaching the end but probably would have taken too much time to implement. Seriously tho fantastic job!!!!!!

Awww I am glad you liked the game. :)
I never thought about a death counter, I didn't figure it would be necessary! But the last bits were added in a rush so... I didn't think about that kind of things. It would have been pretty quick to do actually.
Anyway, thanks a lot for your comment :)

Very unique game idea with great art & sound. The only thing i didn't like was the delay on the slot gun, it feels very frustrating.

Hello, thank you! Ah yeah, I've been told that. The delay is actually a choice I made because it was the most reliable way I managed to correct a (rather serious) bug. I didn't want it to be there in the first place. I could definitely improve it a bit though!
Sorry about the frustration!

So the game looks fantastic, the animations and art are beautiful for a 48 hour jam, sadly it seems like you ran out of time for most of the rest, as the sprites ingame said. on the technical side as far as what made it in the game, it all runs very smoothly and feels nice, the background and parallax effect are a nice touch (although the character feels perhaps a bit too fast for the running animation).
Sadly the gameplay is mostly bare with not much to talk about. With the bullet being the only real useful slot in the game as it is, once you master landing on the right slot it is mostly just a delay mechanic in shooting and not much else.
Had you more time, what I would have liked to see was a use for the bomb other than hitting enemies, such as destroying objects. One or two more slot types, perhaps something to heal like a leech bullet and a bit more length added to the game.
Still, art is a 10 from me, and the characters were very nice and creative for what was there.

Hello! Thank you for taking the time to give me feedback!
For the running animation, i didn't think about it. I should look into that!
I did not think about the bomb having more uses, perhaps i shoyld look into that for the post-jam version. (It's basically supposed to be a health drainer)
About mastering the slot, adding more items into the mix and increasing difficulty (yes there is a difficulty variable, i just didn't have the occasion to activate it) would have, i believe, strikingly improve it.
I also planned the new slots (that i didn't manage to implement due to lack of time) to be chosen at some point. For example, deciding between picking two slightly good items (improving the slot pool) or one very good item along with a debuff item.
It's a shame cause these would have been gery easy to add. Sadly, every remaining minutes mattered so i mostly focused on the level building near the end.
And thank you for the 10 in art :)

The game is a visual novel and falls short of being anything more. The theme is very well implemented but in doing so it has made the core gameplay very boring. Standing there and rolling a slot machine hoping to get a bullet and then continually getting bombs ending your life. From what I played there was a lack of a way for the player to gain health which made even more infuriating when you got a bomb.
Please note: Audio is broken on my computer so I cant rate the music

Hello, thank you for your feedback! I am aware that the lack of slotties (slot items) is an issue because i actually intended to have more items you could fall on! So it mostly is a tome issue. I intended more good items (like a healing bullet) but fell short on time. I also should have added pickups!
Additionally, i should have implemented a way for patterns to show less nombs. All of this is easy to add/tweak but unfortunately i really lacked time.
PS: too bad for the audio, i worked a lot on it and i believe it would have made the game a lot more satisfying to play for you :) (I mean it's not perfect but i think the game feels less good without it)
