Edit: Shift is Jump
Me (William) and my friend James just started making games together a little over a month ago. He does the art, and I try and do the programming. We worked together remotely to finish this project.
This is both of our first game jam, and we both really enjoyed it. I really like the challenge ofworking in the confines of what was possible thoughout the jam. As well as the theme. I think James came up with areally cool mechanic and thought it was an interesting way to utilize the idea of sacrifice. However, unfortunately, didnt realize how much I still had to do couldnt spend as much time on the levels as I would have like, but oh well!
Please let me know what you think, I've been using game maker for about 6 months now, and james just started doing game art more recently than that, so we'd both love to hear from you.
Lastly, I ran out of time and couldnt do a proper menu, room transitions, or sound effects, bit off a little more than i could chew lol

It's a pretty similar idea to a couple of other games I've seen, but it's still a good one that fits well with the theme. The design of the gameplay and levels is mostly good but it's marred by some dodgy collisions. I did make it to the end despite that.
The graphics are pretty decent, though there could be a bit more animation. I really like the respawn animation, at least. The music is sweet. It's a shame there aren't any sound effects.

I like the idea and the art is cool :)
Some criticism:
The collisions get really buggy sometimes and I don't get why use shift for jump .-.
The window height could be smaller, since there's much unused space and you could use some sfx for the sacrifice and jumping (I always use bfxr.net for fast sfx). The BGM is nice.
I wish there were more levels or at least more challenging ones. The game concept is interesting to keep working on post-jam if you want to improve :)SubmittedKamikaze

The art and animations of your game are nice, but the gameplay need more work, as it has some bugs, like buttons not pressing with dead bodies on them, character getting stucked between buttons on lava level and so on. The music is nice though and the theme of sacrifice was very clear here. Good job!

Interesting idea that used the theme well! I got stuck pretty quickly though and there were some issues with things such as buttons being pressed without dead bodies. With improved level design and sound effects I think that this game could be expanded on!

It didn't seem to work for me :( I included it in my GM48: Sacrifice compilation video series, if you’d like to take a look. :) https://youtu.be/GLJFbs0fnfE

Got stuck 2 times on the 2nd button in the lava level, couldn't do anything apart from shutting down the game.
I didn't try to go futher because the level are really uninspired. Maybe it gets better, but the first 4-5 levels are almost the same and dont bring anything new.
Also, did you playtest the game with a controller ? You need to set a deadzone ! My character was moving on his own at the start, I had to unplug my controller.

Hey man thanks for playing the game! I agree with you on the levels in a lot of ways. I simply didn't realize how much i still had to do on the game to make it decently playable before I started work on the levels. That's just a lesson in time management I had to learn lol. So the levels turned out to be more tutorialish than I would have liked. Instead of attemptiing to design more complex puzzles from the start I settled for try to teach simple mechanics along the way. One switch one door, two switches one door, sometimes you fall in a hole and get trapped. That being said I agree the levels are too simple and would like to expand on them. Lastly, I very easily could have set a dead zone for the controller but i was mostly designing with keyboard in mind and again i was in a time crunch and that lead to the oversight.
Thanks for your feedback, we both appreciate you playing the game!

Hey excellent job to you both! I really liked the art and the use of theme! I loved the music, though i'm not sure it it fit the setting perfectly, but it was still awesome! Like the other comment says, more sound effects would be great. Sometimes my player would get stuck in on the corner of ledges and sometimes in walls.
Overall nice job!

Hey, thanks for the reply! We really appreciate you playing the game. To be honest, this being our first game jam we both totally forgot about audio until the last second and by that time it was too late. So I through in a song a friend wrote for a different game I was working on lol. So I totally agree with the notes on the music and the sfx!

The main idea was in tact and hit the theme well. My only issues with the game are that the levels are very simple and there aren't any sound effects.
