Funny game! Only issue really is the movement is very awkward. I get he's a frog and everything, but still, I bet you could've thought of something better... Also I think fullscreen's a broken xD

Wow, this has very high production values for a jam game! Full voice acting, fluidly animated characters and even some original songs! It was pretty enjoyable following along with the story and the world was easy to get immersed in. I like how there was a bit of variety in the gameplay with both the jumping segments and the music segment. The jumping controls were a little bit tricky though. It would have been nice to at least provide a check point before the platforming segment with the pink leaves (petals?).

This is probably the most polished and finished game I played so far, good job. Here's my list of nitpicks:

    • The characters' lips didn't move.
    • It was hard to judge the trajectory of your jump, so sometimes I landed waaay farther than I wanted to.
    • The ribbit guy says something other than ribbit.
    • What's the blue stuff on the edges of the map? Water? Oh right, frogs can't swim. Dummy me.
    • Why's there only one song to play?
    • Sometimes there are moments of awkward waiting, such as when mr frog DJ gives his monologue in front of you.
    • Why does punching mr frog DJ give you a magic seed? That just doesn't make sense at all.

I definitely felt quite immersed in the world. I enjoyed the sound and the voice acting. Very cute game. I also liked how there was that music game in addition to the platforming stuff. Though when I got to the platforming, definitely felt the familiar frustration of playing "getting over it". I don't think that is a bad thing on its own. However, you took the time to build out such a narrative world with interesting characters and the jumping mechanic made it difficult to explore. I think those two things clashed with each other a little. I wanted to explore more but it was also frustrating to get around. Both things on their own were great for me though. Definitely a game that stands out.

Ah thanks Heather! glad you liked the music too haha <3

I'm really going to have to balance the platforming. Because the "getting over it" comedy-vibe is something I like, although right now the parts are taking people too long to stay immersed in the story.

Thanks for the feedback and playing!

First game to make me laugh out loud. That was quite the experience!

Loved your art style as always, the addition of voice acting and and voiced music was really nice too. For a game about music, the music was really good too! The story that was told was really quirky and fun, like all your games I have tried so far :)

My main feedback, like most, would be the controls. But I don't feel the execution was an issues, I just feel having to crouch with S was a bit unnecessary, and could have just been the default when not in cutscenes (since I seemd to be always holding it down and it didn't seem to make a difference in the movement)

Overall really cool game! Congratulations :D

Thanks a lot Eric, and wow, having him duck as default is maybe the solution. Maybe have the player have to duck only that first time for comedic effect.. thanks haha

It is hard to overcome the Tower Guy ^^ I liked the idea or Rocking Frogs, though :)

Visually it's good, as always with you, I think everyone who have aren't first-timers recognizes already your style. It was nice to have voice acting, but characters voices felt bit 'hollow', I didn't feel they emitted that much of emotion, which narration tried showcase.

As others have mentioned, jumping was tedious. As jumping was main movement (it's a frog duh), it would have needed more polish. I figured to hold S all the time and use Arrows to moving and jumping. What threw me off for long time was direction of frog jump. One of the reasons is he tilted a bit when squatting. Now when you squat and directed yourself to absolut right and then corrected a bit to left, the frog sprite would flip. As squat position is tilted, flipping it would cause direction seemingly change radically. Also it seemed that jump height varied a lot. These made scaling up to the paperplane pretty hard :c

ps. I hated Frogstar too. :P

ps.ps. What was firefly for (plans for it)? I visited it, didn't do anything

Haha, I'm living in the shadow of Tower guy.. No thanks a lot fo playing Tero, means a lot! :) Yeah so the height had to do with if you're "holding up", but also worked with momentum. So if you kept jumping all the time without really resting, you could actually jump great lengths. I think one of the biggest reasons why everyone is struggling is because this is a "under the hood" mechanic. While testing myself I would just jump til max momentum and then it was easy haha.

The Dragonfly was planned to be a semi-secret character. Had dialogue ready and stuff but didn't make the cut. Glad you found him though! Was a tough jump. The Dragonfly was supposed to learn the player about that here are more ponds in this world. Would make the last scene a bit less vague as well.

Wow, what a refreshing style of a game to run into while blasting through all the jam games! It's precious and I only wish there was more of it. I loved the bill wurtz -moment when you find the seed.

The only real problem I had with it was that the jumping was pretty clumsy and sometimes unpredictable, but I know you already know it had issues because apparently most other people think so too. But the platforming element wasn't really a major selling point I suppose, although it did end up taking a large portion of the total play time because I fell down so many times. I have to say I laughed out loud when I first figured out that hopping about is how you're supposed to navigate.

I think it's the ideal jam game - a short little story that keeps you interested the entire time and makes you want more while still being satisfied with what it was and how it concluded. Music in a major role, an art style that stands out and voice acting were some welcome surprises.

    Controls

First I thought that there was some problem with the controls before I realized how the frogs move. Later on when I ttied to climb up and high, it was little tedious after I have jumped so many times too long and dropped all the way down. Maybe I should try later this with the gamepad, if it is easier to jump.

Great story that was fun to follow. Art is very pleasing to eyes and music to the ears.

Good game to be the last game to play for today. Nice job!

Thanks for playing Serial, yeah with gamepad is a little easier since you can just hold down the joystick and use X (or [A]) to jump. Glad you liked it so far! :)

    Another great game!

My only issue with it is the jumping. It was extremely funny first, but became really frustrating by the time I needed to get to the top left of the level, and had to go all the way back to the right each time I fell é_è

Heey thanks Fachewachewa, Ah yeah the controls haha. Going to polish that after this jam for a post-jam version. (just a polished version with some small things)

Ending can be tough yeah. Didn't have time to play test that, and as a developer the jumping wasn't hard for me because I knew how it worked haha.

Oh wow, this was something else. I don't know what I expected, but it was not a fully voice-acted visual novel! Fantastic work, even without considering the time constraint. Was a bit hard to estimate how far I'd end up jumping, but that was not a major issue. I found a dragonfly, does he do anything? Loved it.

    • Kyon

Aah thanks a lot!! Appreciate it. Yeah the jumping uses momentum, so the more you jump without resting the higher (and faster!) you can get. But it's all "under the hood" so a lot of people are struggling with it.

I think you're the first one who found the Dragonfly. Was supposed to add a bit to the story but got cut out. Left it's design in though. I did write dialogue for it and stuff.

I loved the art style and character designs! I liked the sound design and music, too. However, the vocal jumping sound got annoying really fast, considering how much jumping happens in this game!

I found the jumping system to be extremely frustrating and punishing. It was an interesting idea, but needed polish and tuning. But I did manage to make it to the end, eventually. The musical mini game was more fun, but was swamped by the length of the platforming section.

The story and writing were fun, with some great characters, but I ultimately found the antagonist to be too funny and likable to hate them like the main character did. I ended up sympathizing with Frogstar more than the main character, which probably wasn't the goal.

All in all, it was a good game with really enjoyable art.

Aaah thanks Alex, really means a lot. The voiceacting and the jumpsound was added last minute, it has some pitch difference and multiple samples but yeah haha, I can imagine it being annoying especially when doing that ending platforming part.

I like Frogstar the most too! (had a lot of fun doing his singing voice haha) The idea wasn't really to sympathize with the main character, he is kind of an asshole who only likes his own music. Frogstar doesn't do anything wrong in my opinion haha.

I really love your work. The art and sound design is always such a treat! I wish I could have figured out the controls a bit more this time around haha. I could just not get the movement controls down properly! I know that this was an artistic choice, so it's probably more of an issue on my end. Once I have more time I am going to give it another go. I really want to see the ending!

Thanks for creating such wonderfully weird and creative stuff time after time!

This game really spoke to my 17-years-old past self...

    • Character designs were just lovely
    • Overall graphics were really nice and synched well with the concept
    • Usage of theme was original
    • Story was whole (and wholesome) though I wished there would have been more content between the beginning and the ending
    • Player movement was a nice, refreshing idea but controls made it pretty frustrating. Especially when you climbed up the pink leaves (I almost gave up, fortunately I didn't since I loved the ending). Maybe it could be more pleasant if jumping happened just after releasing the squat key without using the jump key?

I could easily buy this game if there was more content and more flowing movement!

Ah thanks a lot Dosto!! The story was meant to be bigger. There is actually an extra character that should've played a part in the story, you can find him in-game actually, he's quite "hidden" but reachable.

Player movement yeah, it used to be with pressing Space instead of up, but some keyboards can't handle "Right + Left + Space". With a gamepad it's easier. But yeah, I guess for me the movement was quite easy because I tested it all the time, sucks that I never have time to let people playtest during these jams haha.

      Thanks again! :)

That jumping caught me totally off guard, but it makes all the sense! Everything in the game feels funny and fresh, I loved playing it. This kind of humor, characters and themes could be the base for a full length game. Excellent!
