Sub Squid has to defeat the horrifying Mech-Whale, and only has a single torpedo to do it, so don't go firing it beforehand. Escort the torpedo throughout the stage and keep it safe! Even at the cost of your own health.

Controls
Space - shoot
Ctrl - Grab torpedo
w, a ,s, d or arrow keys - move
Press enter while grabbing the torpedo to launch.

Fun game, great graphics! I included it in my compilation video series of all of the games from the GM48, if you’d like to take a look :) https://youtu.be/K_L2zq0zxbg

Really nice game. The concept is creative and is a great use of theme. It's challenging and fun trying to manage both the torpedo and the squid. I enjoyed how you had a segment where the squid and torpedo are separated, as well as a boss battle.

The presentation is also really great. The music is all fantastic and really helps to set the mood. The art is also very well done and it all works together.

There's just one glaring issue: the lack of checkpoints. It's not really that the game's too difficult (you could probably even lower the health if you added checkpoints), it's that you have to go through lot of stuff you've already seen. For instance, it's hard to process what the gate/fire buttons do on your first visit so it seems unfair to make the player wait so long before getting another chance to understand them.

Great implementation of the theme. 1 escort mission that allowed you to make mistakes. The only mistake that couldn't be taken lightly was letting the torpedo be destroyed by colliding with walls or hits from the enemies. Very lovely done. I loved the art and the pace of the game as well as the music. Everything fit together just right. Very polished! I wish the squid moved a bit faster or shot faster lol, but that'd make it easier or require a lot more work from your part.

Awesome game! The art and sound were really good and appropriate for the underwater setting, the idea of making the one shot theme into an escort mission was genius in my opinion, and you pulled it off really well, polished game, with attention to detail and really interesting design for both the enemies and the level (That gate part was really cool).

My only complaint is the excessive difficulty making it pretty frustrating to start again from the beginning, and the controls being a little clumsy. Other than that, one of the best games in the jam.

Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it and I'm very happy to get such a nice review. if I could go back and change one thing I'd be the difficulty clashing with the slow nature of the game (And a few bugs ha). Thanks for the feedback.

Water levels suck, but not this game.

I like how you have to manage the torpedo with you! Couldn't get to the ending, at some point I just gave up cause I was tired of doing the beginning over and over again. Which leads to stuff that could be improved:

    • checkpoints. Would avoid the issue I just addressed.
    • the bouncing red crab bullets should probably fade after a while, they take forever
    • I love how the music doesn't feel repetitive at all. ...the same can't be said to the shooting sound. Alter its pitch, it gets annoying after a while!
    • I like the bubblexplosion. Not something you can improve btw, I just left it there cause I am too lazy to say it elsewhere.

Thank you very much for the feedback, I definitely agree I should've added checkpoints, I'll be more careful about balancing difficulty in the future. In a game that moves fairly slowly I understand it would get frustrating to go the beginning many times. And I'll be more aware of repetitive sounds next time.

      Thanks for playing!

Very good game. Not much to add to what other have said, except the animations were excellent for a jam, and I liked the variation in ennemies / patterns. You should maybe have added some pitch variations to the shooting sound though.

Also some parts were a little confusing, I understood right away that I needed to open the door, then I went back and moved the torpedo, but stayed down and I was just stuck. Lost a run also because I forgot that the boss had a hatch and shot the torpedo instantly :'D

    Anyways, very impressive game !

Thank you very much, I'm seeing that the laser sound was annoying some people, so I'll be sure to keep in mind both audio volume and pitch variation for something that repetitive in future projects. The gate area is easily the most confusing, and I can see how it would feel unfair to lose there the first time around. Thank you for the feedback!

I wondering what I'm missing here, I couldn't move the submarine and it just slams into the first wall it reaches. It's a shame, it looks like a juicy game.

You have to move the squid character on top of it and hit either of the Control keys to grab on, and then move it from there. If that is not working, that is really strange and I'm not sure what the problem could be. It's one of the only keys I didn't set up a alternate key for unfortunately.

Really good effort with this one, I enjoyed playing it. Having an escort mission as your "one shot" is a cool take on the theme. It was pretty challenging, I wasn't able to get to the end but I tried plenty of times, which is a great sign that your game is engaging. I would have liked a checkpoint system but I understand you can only do so much in 48 hours.

I wasn't clear how to open the door in the blue metal section. I got the first switch fine but then the following switches didn't make sense to me. I even got the torpedo up high so that it activated the switches on the bottom and I passed over the top part... what was I supposed to do there?

Decent graphics with a good variety of enemies. Good music that didn't get too annoying (though the shooting noise did a little).

    P.S. I didn't realise fish were such jerks :)

Thanks for the feedback! The metal section was going to have more signs and hints to make it clearer but I ran out of time before getting to that, so I figured it might be a bit confusing. The doors are only controlled with the switches that have the word "GATE" on them. The twin switches with "FIRE" written on them actually take in your bullets and shoot them down below to attack the enemies down there. So to open the gates you only need to focus on the GATE switches, sorry for the confusion.

Having them both look like switches and both use the colour red is a problem. I think I should have made them tubes, that suck in bubbles or something similar, which then suck in the players attacks.

Thank you very much for playing.

I also have no idea why the fish want to destroy a torpedo so badly, so they must just be jerks ha.

    This is really well done.

It's hard - I haven't actually beat it, only because I got super close to the end of the game (I think?) and then failed because I wasn't able to move the torpedo in time which made me sort of "rage-quit" haha.

But really, top notch work. The art is consistent, the gameplay is smooth, and the difficulty is well tuned to make you feel that "I can get it if I just do it one more time..."

Thank you very much! And thanks for the feedback, it was difficult to balance the difficulty. I have a bit of a bias when I know what is coming next haha. Maybe a checkpoint, or powerups.

Wow, I'm impressed. Good to great in every category. I have no criticisms, which is rare for me. Even though it was pretty hard at times, even frustratingly so; I just kept playing again and again until I beat it. That's the mark of a really good game. Wouldn't be at all surprised if this won. Would be surprised if this wasn't a top three. Great job.

Great mechanic, excellent music, sound and graphics. Really impressive for the time given. I found it pretty difficult though, as the speed of movement is very slow. That could just be me though. Probably the most polished game I've seen in this GM48.

Thank you very much. The missile movement was slow to discourage holding on and dodging the whole time rather than shooting but I think you are right and I overdid it a bit and made it too slow. Thanks for the feedback!

Cool mechanic of leading the torpedo while fighting enemies and really well polished for 48hrs.
