Due to humanity's heavy underground industries, the earth shattered into three pieces now located in different corners of the solar system. You, the captain of XX Discovery space shuttle and your robot companion B/N15 are commisioned to bring it all back together. The space shuttle is equipped with a handy galactic compass, but you have no map of the solar system available, so you have to make one yourself.

Controls:
  • WASD - Move
  • Tab - Toggle Map
  • Spacebar - Skip Dialogue
  • Each action has alternative inputs

Goal:

Find all three earth pieces and collect as much cash as you can in the process.

Wow a 3D game on a GM jam, that's nice. Make the dialogues shorter and faster. I also think for a jam game it's okay to forego different difficult settings and instead focus on more content.

The different difficltysettings didn't really take any time to make. They just require a couple lines of code and fills up the main menu so that we didn't have to make more art there.

I totally agree that this would've benefited from more content. One of us had an idea to make a shop in the beginning where you could buy upgrades and such. But sadly, we didn't have time for that.

Is this a sequel to Just Junk?? I thought there was a familiar vibe and the dialogue heavily implied it so I checked who made this game and it was indeed you people! For some reason I fondly remember enjoying Just Junk. This game has the same mood that I enjoy, and I think a lot of it is created by the music. I couldn't finish Moon Mission because I just got lost all the time and the map wasn't really helping. After playing it for a while I gave up and restarted to see the beginning again and I remembered that there were different difficulty options. I think I was playing on "fair". But I really need to try this again, maybe with the easier difficulty level, because I want to see how it ends!

Yes! It's a sequel of some sort. I assume you reacted to all the mentions of junk technology and such, but it makes me disproportionately delighted that someone actually remembers what we made more than a year ago.

Sorry, the map is quite poorly introduced and not explained at all. And there probably should be a game mode where you can see your ship on the map so that you don't get entirely lost. I hope you got something out of the game at least.

Also, you probably don't have time when reading this, but I want to warn you that easy mode isn't that easy either.

I like the 3D artstyle and the music is also nice! The discovery theme is strong and it was fun to navigate the space (after I realized there's a map). I wish you could switch to full screen mode though.

It's funny that I actually made a very similar game for the Global Game Jam this year: https://reaktori.itch.io/remains-of-earth

Woah, another game where you repair earth. It seems more similar in terms of story than gameplay though.

Thank you for the feedback! I hope you didn't waste too much time not knowing about the map.

I found the artstyle to be pretty and cohesive. Floating around was fun, however, I had a lot of difficulty with finding myself on the map. If there is an indicator for the player ship, I simply must've missed it...

I love how the ship 'rises' once it gets near a planet, that's a neat touch!

No, there is no indicator of your position. The game is inspired by the sport orienteering where you use a regular map and a compass to navigate through the woods.

If you are wondering, I used animation curves to acheive the rising effect.

A lot of 3D games this jam, and this one was also very nice! Love the little space ship turning and moving around :)

Pretty cool game! You really nailed it with the 3D visuals, and I know how hard it is to do something like this in an engine like GameMaker! Your approach to the theme was pretty unique, though I did feel bored and really lost at times (sometimes I couldn't see literally anthing around, thought I passed the limits of the map and went back, also found nothing), but I guess finding each piece of the Earth was what kept me going. Dialogs pretty funny too. I played on the middle difficulty.

Thank you for the feedback! This is actually the first time I've tried making 3D, even though I've been semi-regularly using Unity for the past 2 years... I don't know why I make it so hard for myself.

I understand it's possible to get a little bit bored considering there isn't much action going on. And yeah, there is nothing telling you you have reached the end of the map except that you won't find any more white pellets.

Well that was a nice game. But I have complaints!

    • The map closing sound if about 34 times louder than the opening sound (and everything else)
    • Way too much text (apparently mixed with tutorial), hard to read font, and the skip text REALLY skips the text, so if you want to read everything, you also need to wait for the full text to appear (which really takes a while, and I'm a slow reader). ...I'm sorry, but I skipped everything 😬
    • I think there was a third thing but I forgot :(

Also, I played in fair mode, but if the player isn't displayed on the map on easy, it might actually be harder than fair? Since you can't really find yourself with newly added planets :D

Other than that, I don't really know why, but I really liked the giants / statues / idk holding the pieces of Earth. And of course the way planets get added to the map as you discover them is really nice.
Oh and really good job on those 3D objects, it doesn't look too fancy (I mean, it's like the exact right amount of polygons to fit the artstyle), and it really adds a lot to the game.

Yeah, we have never been that good at difficulty-tuning (almost always making it too hard). This was especially hard since there aren't really any action- nor puzzle- elements. It's more about finding precise directions and figuring out where you are if you get lost. These challenges are quite uncommon, which makes the difficulty hard to compare with other games.

No one in the team has ever done 3D-modelling for games before, so we really didn't have want to aim for anything fancy.

I really enjoyed the 3D aspect and the space exploration side of this one, it's an interesting game with funky retro aesthetics and I enjoyed having a little fly around space - my only issue is the tutorial text is very worded, a lot of saying without doing which got a little much sometimes, maybe slimming down the tutorial a bit might help, other than that though, it's a great entry, good job :)

We didn't really think about the intro text as a tutorial. Honestly, we didn't think much at all about any tutorial :(

As you might expect, the text was added during the very last hours. We initially wanted to have small pieces of text sprinkled out throughout the game (like when you approach a portal for the first time, find an earth-piece etc.). But this is what came out in the end.

thank you for leaving feedback :D

    I cry every time.

Earth is restored, the art and 3D are great of course. I wish you had a more hands on camera, or at least it showed your ship position on the map.

    403 points, 500% fuel capacity :)

Perhaps you could have your position displayed on easy mode. But then I wonder, what is even the point of the game if all you have to do is head straight to your destinations?

The same reason goes for the rigid camera. I know it's frustrating (and unrealistic), but if you could see the planets ahead of you, there would be little to no challenge.

Thank you for playing and leaving feedback!

This was a very impressive game. As other people said, the map was a bit hard to use, and the camera felt quite limited, but it was a great experience nonetheless :)

I know, you just want to tilt the camera up and see the entire universe. However, that would make you see where you are heading and hence remove the need to navigate using directions.

Thank you for playing and leaving feedback!

I jumped into the deep end and decided to play hard mode first, and I enjoyed it. I like exploration games and being disoriented, but it would have been nice to know where you are approximately on the map. I wouldn't want to sacrifice the theme of discovery by showing your exact location, but maybe there could be a general hint (e.g. highlight the quadrant your are currently exploring, or highlight the last planet you visited).

However, I did find the pixel font to be pretty tricky to read at times. A few times I wasn't able to read parts of the text because N's look similar to H's. This would have been fine if the dialogue didn't automatically skip after a few seconds. I recommend using high-resolution fonts for text in the future, or to find a pixel font that is slightly larger so there is less ambiguity between letters.

Overall, this is one of my favourite submissions so far.

Yeah, the font is bad. It is actually a rescaled regular font. We had a pixel-font but it wasn't small enough and we didn't really have time to find a smaller one.

I don't know about the quadrant idea, but I understand the problem. Perhaps we could have had more variety in the looks of the planets.

Thank you for the feedback! And congratulations for completing hard mode!

That was pretty cool! I did get a bit disoriented a few times, since the player isn't represented on the map at all, but it actually was pretty, well, fair, in Fair mode. There's enough landmarks to keep a good sense of where you are if you pay attention (although warping just made me confused...I thought they always sent you back to the center maybe, at first). Ended up just shy of 1000 points/fuel by the time I found all 3 pieces.

Disorientation could have been the name of the game if we didn't stick to a aliterative naming tradition. Glad to hear it wasn't too confusing :D

I had a friend play the game who also thought he returned to the beginning after entering a portal. It's pretty reasonable to assume you died since they look a lot like black holes. We were planning to have some dialogue when you approached the portals, explaining what they do, but yeah, the time limit.

Thank you for playing and leaving feedback. I have no idea how good of a score 1000 is, but congrats.

I really get a strong sense of discovery from this one, nice. I originally started the game in hard mode and planned to map the area out, but upon discovering that the map doesn't actually show your current position I realized that was gonna be a lot harder than it initially seemed, as you'd need to find "landmarks" in the form of distinct planets that are right next to each other to get your bearings after things like warping. In Fair mode, the game feels a lot better since you can head out in a general direction and use any planets you find along the way as pit stops.

I like the visual design. The giants floating in space holding the pieces of earth are very cool. I wonder who made them? Were they involved in the splitting of Earth? Weird details like that make questions pop up in the player's mind and I think that's a good thing!

Yeah, the hard difficulty is quite... hard. Knut is the only member of our team who have tried it, and it took him home quite some time to get it done. Fair is how we originally intended the game.

I don't know whether the giants were supposed to have destroyed the earth. I didn't come up with them. I just thought they looked cool and signaled that you found something important.

      Thank you for the feedback!

    Nice graphics and theme.

    Feedback:

    • Wasn't sure if the text boxes in the beginning are obscuring anything but they actually were obscuring the fuel and its how i got without fuel the first time around
    • There were alot of text boxes in the beginning as mentioned...
    • Neat controls / feel of the controls
    • Unsure of my goals (might have skipped through some important text tho...)

Yeah, the goal was explained in the intro and it was to find all three parts of the earth. You would probably have noticed if you found one. They are accompanied with giant human figures.

You can press TAB or M to show a map of the solar system on which you will find all three pieces outlined in white (assuming you are playing on easy or fair). This, however, is not explained in the game. So the game is pretty reliant of the description (which I know it shouldn't be since not everyone reads it).

    This one looks so cool!

Looks like it uses actual 3D models from what I can see from the extra files. I got a little lost trying to find planets to refuel but I suppose that's part of the challenge. The writing also gave me a good chuckle and was a nice addition.

Looks and feels great, especially for a jam game.
