PLOT

Welcome to Boyard Island, one of the most conventional island you can find, where friends and families live together, mostly undisturbed.

On Boyard, everything is so ordinary that even going out to get some milk can be an adventure on its own!

Luckily, this is the mission your mother gave you. Will you accept it?

FEATURES
  • explore a dense, 3D open world
  • meet a dozen of colorful characters
  • mind-bending puzzles
  • multiple options, play as a pacifist or as a psycopath
  • secrets and easter eggs

GAMEPLAY

Explore the island, talk to the population and solve puzzles.

  • WASD / ZQSD or arrow keys to move
  • Spacebar to interact with stuff

You can also use a controller, with action mapped to A (on an Xbox gamepad).

You might learn new actions during the game, controls will be explained then. With one exception so I'll tell you here: if you're on gamepad, Start has the same function as Escape.

HINTS

If you're lost or don't really know what to do, here's some vague hints:

  • No, this is not a bug. (unless there's some shader compilation error, in that case I think you need DirectX)
  • Make sure to talk to everyone, Boyard's population have interesting stuff to say.
  • This is a VERY COHERENT world!(!!!) What you learn is conserved between runs, but not your inventory.
  • Some important NPCs have a different dialog depending on other stuff. Those NPCs usually tell you to come back, or other NPCs talk about them.

SPECIAL THANKS
  • Neights for the Cow sprite and brainstorming
  • Beun for playtesting

MISC

This is the first time I used delta_time or a XOR operator!

Also, when I saw the theme I instantly thought "okay so I guess we'll see 50 versions of Minit". WELL would you look at that, who made some kind of Minit?!

It wasn't my objective at first, I started by playing with the 3D stuff to see where it led me... So yeah, the similarity is purely accidental. (For the record I have nothing against Minit and you should play it if you haven't)

Really neat and clever game. I like how everything seems super weird and random at first but over time you get a better understanding of how the world works and what you can do to influence it. I wasn't keen on how a lot of the elements seemed like red herrings (e.g. the axe shop) but I guess that adds to the puzzle somewhat.

The graphics are functional but not particularly appealing. At first I wondered if the 3d even added much but I came around when I saw how the effect of stuff falling over worked into the game. The music sounds a bit off (though I guess it does sort of fit with the strangeness of the world) and it feels like sound effects are missing.

      Thanks for the feedback!

Like I said below, the axe shop was more intended as a joke than a full red herring, but I messed up on that part.

I'm still not sure what I'm doing with music at all (it was also the last thing I made), but I tried to make it sound like a mix of some kind of island music mixed with something like lavender town. I guess the feeling is here, but yeah there's too much happening at once.

Well, that was trippy and super weird! Had issues knowing what to do after talking to the 3D head, but figured it all out and beat it in the end. Funny, kind of creepy and honestly was a real good use of the theme. I had no idea what Minit was when I started but now I want to check it out.

A bit too confusing is the main issue but it also kind of adds to the insanity feeling it has.

Good job on the game, It sure made me want to keep playing till I figured out what to do. it was... very interesting ha.

Thanks :D Honestly, people saying they want to check out Minit after that is the best compliment <3

Yeah I'm trying to tweak it for the post jam version so it's still a little confusing, but not too much, especially not in a frustrating way.

This seems like it would be a fun game if things didn't keep randomly falling over all the time. My character also seemed to quickly fall over, making me start the entire game over. GameMaker really needs an option to billboard sprites in 3D mode, so they constantly face the camera to prevent the cardboard cutout effect.

It's not random, it's part of the gameplay. Each kind of object has a timer, for example all bushed fall after a few seconds, while trees and rocks take way longer.

I'm not sure what you mean with cardboard cutout effect though. It's possible to make each billboard face the camera in game maker, but it's something I didn't want here.

Wow this is great. Managed to get the milk but could not figure out a route to get back to my mom in time, I think a few more tries and I would beat it though.

I played it without reading other peoples feedback and did not find it overly confusing, although I did spend a lot of time trying to buy the ax.

I have not played Minit but this makes me want to check it out.

      Thanks! :D

I don't know if you found it, but the medium can give you another power after you consumed something for the first time. It helps a lot to finish the game :D (it's not even supposed to be doable without it, but Problematicar found a way to "speedrun" it é_è)

And yeah, if you liked this weird thing I made, I think you'll enjoy Minit a lot :)

This is great. Full disclosure, I haven't figured out how to get a bucket yet, but I've at least gone through the subway. Always a fan of billboarding and just dig it all around. Great job!

    Amazing use of the theme!

It took reading the comments and the description to figure out where to start though. I thought it was a bug at first...

Interesting game! I included it in my GM48: Countdown compilation video series, if you’d like to take a look. :) https://youtu.be/2kFo5aya1ME

I tried really hard winning the game, so I guess you made it really attractive and immersive. Love seeing games in 3d. Unfortunately, I couldn't even get trough the subway you mentioned in response to another mans feedback. I guess, you should make it more clear on what we have to do, and the timer should be somewhere written. But hey, it's only 48h. I bet you know what you did wrong too, but was too late to fix it.

      Thanks for the feedback :)

The timer are actually displayed after you talk to the medium. Basically to get to the subway you have to:

      • speak with the NPC who tells you you need a password (girl behind the axes)
      • talk to your mom, it'll ask her about the password, and she tells you to ask your dad
      • ask you dad. you can also just speak to your dad directly after the first step

Like I said to kwis, it's indeed arbitrary and I didn't have time to make some kind of indication to tell you who has new things to say (I had a NPC tell you "ask your mom if you're lost" but that's all). There's also the fact that the mom & dad thing acts the same way if you ask for coins, but happens before the password thing, so you can also miss it because of that.

I've talked to everybody and I can't figure out what to do. For some reason I just have to keep playing though. I read though your hints but I'm still lost. I read the other feedback and that sorta help but I'm still lost. The good news is I still want to keep playing. Any more tips???? :) I will edit this post if I figure it out.

I'm guessing you've talked to the medium? If so, she tells you to come back (you have to talk to her again to see that, I know that's not very intuitive).

      So :

      • if you've talked to the medium then don't know what to do, go around the cows, you might see something new. After exploring that (you'll get a new "ability") you can go back to see the medium.
      • if you havent talked to the medium, you need to take the subway. There is kind a of "questline" for the subway, first someone tells you about it, then you can get help from someone else.

The game is very confusing at first. It take more than needed to figure out the nature of the weird events. They are understood as bug because thre is no feedback to it. It would have helped to have a visual effect, not just it being flat. Maybe some sound effects would have helped too. We feel really too clueless at first. Maybe some NPC could aknowledge it more clearer than "noticed weird events". Another NPC noticing the weirdness could hint it more, for example. The coin is apparently useless? Just like the axes, what are their purposes? You said in the description everything is coherent but these characters only serve as noise in your quest, which is fairly strange and misleading. I didn't felt like progressing while talking to them (axes, axe seller, the coin guy) while I expect them to play a role.... but they're actually completely unrelated. Which isn't very.. intuitive cause you have the wrong kind of expectations. Also you're not sure what you need to learn so that the witch gives you new powers. While it was only about learning for the restart function (that should have been given sooner or being attributed to R rather than Escape) so it took me a bit before going back to the witch. So yeah the whole game is kind of weird in the way it gives you vital informations and it feels like their delivery is a bit too arbitrary.

Other than that, the idea was neat. In the end, there weren't as many Minit-like games as expected, so this one feels more unique. It lacks some juice (the art and visual effects are too simple, although we can't really blame you) and some kind of "better logic" (useless informations that adds to the pool of incomprehension; although it could be intentional, but then it messes with the pace of the game). Aside that I like how mechanics are introduced and how you progressively get more aware of how the world's logic works. It felt very innovative in that sense!

Ahah yeah I wasn't too serious about the coherence thing :D

It's funny you're the first one to mention the lack of feedback for the flattening effect (even if that's kind of implied by other people reactions). It's definitely something I intended to do but didn't have the time. I think I'll put out a few fixes before uploading it to itch, but basically all the "hint" section is stuff I intend to "explain" in gameplay. You definitely nailed it with everything being too arbitrary.

The whole axe thing is only there for the "joke" (the idea being everything in games is usually there only for the player, hence the hungry guy who can't find food too). Well, I think it's still important for the rest of the game, to sell the idea of a normal story; but yeah the fact that progression is unclear is a big problem. My idea of it was first, trying to get an axe to cut the tree, but then quickly realizing it was impossible, and searching for another solution.

Anyway, thanks for the very complete feedback!

This game is really clever! I had a lot of fun exploring the island and figuring out how to get further! The art was a bit meh, but everything else was great!

Game crashed few times when I tried to open it :/ (edit. Just stated unexpected error occurred etc) But eventually I get to play, first I had no clue and thought everything fell over by glitch or something, but yeah got eventually to the medium and couple of interactions understood the thing, it was nice idea on theme. I got stuck as I was not fast enough (even taking and giving time) and I think somehow the interactions did not work correctly. Graphical wise, it was not the prettiest out there, but well the storywise you needed the 3D. I spent past 30 minutes to try get further, so maybe I will just leave this here ^^" At the beginning the music started to be really repeating as you heard the beginning again and again, but it was otherwise nice when you could hear more.

I would love to give it a rating and better feedback - however it kept crashing on me. Sorry! :/

Seemed like it could go somewhere though. I actually like the "paper" on 3d look. :)

I was impressed with the ability to interact with things.. That's tough to pull together into 3D.

Crashing how ? Did it show an error ? If so, would you mind sharing it ? I think I'll make a post jam version so I'd like to fix bugs :D

I know there's issues with shaders and direct X since GMS seems to use an older version, but if you interacting with stuff that's not it.

If it's just the game not reacting to movement, have you tried pressing spacebar (or A on a controller) ?
