Okay that was scary! Well, you nailed that part, the game is able to give chills. I guess mostly because we don't expect that kind of games during the gm48 and... well I love horror games but I'm not used to those. The sound design participates a lot, as well as the inability to see very far. The game gives very strong PT vibes, which I think is your main inspiration, which is cool. Really makes me want PT to be a real full game...

    • Just saw in the feedback that you can go further and... yeah tbh, it's not stated in the game (the control) and you don't really have the occasion to use it. There should have been a prompt telling it or you needing to test it out cause I completely forgot about it.
    • Feels weird not being able to use "E" for opening doors
    • Mixels! I don't know why the resolution is not the same everywhere (very low rez for decor, way higher rez for first person arm yet lower rez for the lantern, and the text is HQ, lots of mixes)
    • I would have liked to see sprites (web, door, paintings/photos) that match with the level of detail the rest has (arms, ceiling), notably with a higher resolution for sprite, as this was rather low
    • In any case, pretty immersive game. I really felt like I was there and being able to give me stress while playing is the goal of that genre, so bravo to that!

    Overall, a pretty solid entry

      Thanks for playing, Kwis!

Textures were different sizes, which then resulted different looks all around. I wish I could've had an artist to join me during the event, but had to do all the graphics by myself.

I know it's a bit weird not to use 'E' as opening doors, BUT it would've been completely unnecessary and extra button. Now, with the current control scheme, you don't have to mind too much about other buttons than WASD and mouse!

And yes, P.T and Amnesia both were my inspiration! I had some other ideas for the lantern as well, but decided to drop them and focus on polishing. One idea was to reveal secret (glowing) messages and add some sort of puzzly-elements based on steps, current direction and whatnot. I know there was no more mentions in the game after initial trial & error, but what I've seen/read, most of the people got it after first panic.

That was a lil too scary tbh. I think I woke up my neighbour. Good experience all around. The sound design was cool, the art was nice as well, and as mentioned it's pretty scary. It doesn't matter to me, that it was jump scares, because they get me. I don't know if you can finish the game, or you just stuck looping in the end? The door wouldn't open, so I assumed I just had to embrace it.

    Good stuff.

      Thanks for trying it out!

You can actually get a bit futher from there. You just have to embrace the darkness! Remember that one key/button you haven't used through the whole game or thought it had no use? ;)

      Let the darkness consume you...

I am impressed by the way you have created such a convincing and scary atmosphere with a minimum of assets. 3d with gamemaker is not easy on top of that. The theme of the jam is interpreted in a clever way. If I had to make a negative remark, I would ask for more variety of jump scares trick with the ghost or other tricks to scare the player (but maybe you did it that way to fit with the theme of the loop?).

      Thanks for playing!

I did had ideas I could've made this game longer, but then decided to scrap it all as it already worked quite well and there was no need to push that time any further. Also, I didn't want to fill the game with jump scares (even if there's 2 of them), but add more and more additional details to create uneasy feeling.

All jokes aside, Clean up your room much?

Pretty scary stuff. Sick atmosphere, really had us play it till the end. Writing and ending could've been a bit more creative though.

Hehe, those were just halloween decorations! ^^'

Glad you enjoyed! I do admit the ending was a bit cliche, but (in my opinion) it suits the theme quite well! Anyhow, I'm eager to hear how you would've improved the story! I think "making suicide look like a murder" was good for little jamgame, but I'm always open for more creative approaches. This was one hell of an experience! Very scary!

What I liked: -The atmosphere, obviously -Graphics were nice, reminded me of Eldritch -Sound design was just superb -made me jump -made me genuinly scared apart from jumpscares -clever implementation of the theme

What I'd like to see improved (nitpicky edition): -some real (low poly) 3d models instead of just bilboards could really make it shine even more

Overall this is a very great entry, nicely polished and nothing feels "missing".

I'm glad you liked! I was thinking that some low poly models would've done great job there, but unfortunately lack of my modeling skills let me down with this. However, I think I managed to compensate it quite well as an overall. But I do agree, it would've improved the game even more.

I love it! I have a technical question - was that whole game just one big level, or did you do some non-euclidean stuff so that you can loop back on yourself?

The 'embrace the dark' bit was brilliant - walking down a dark corridor with the stereo sound was a genuinely scary experience. Made me feel some things.

As you can see, ending is already there (bottom right), but you can't see it due to trigger (light red colored) moving you back to beginning. See how similarly built both horizontal corridors are. Moving was simply x -= 12*32; and y -= 12*32; (numbers not accurate, but close enough) when player hit the trigger.

Also, when I spawned audio triggers, if it was near the looping point, I had to spawn 2 of them: one for the top and one for the bottom corridor.

This was actually really well made, given the time you had. You made good use of the theme for sure. A couple solid spooks in there haha. Good work!
