Play as the mage to collect spells to effect the enemies around you, and make your way through the haunted mansion. We had a lot of fun working on this one. Sadly, we had some unforeseen extra time constrains pop up, so think of this as more of a 24 hour jam game and it will seem much more finished xD. Anyway, hope you enjoy!

Summary
Quest for the Dark Arts received appreciation for its classic pixel art style, creative spell design, and atmospheric music, evoking a nostalgic Castlevania-like vibe. However, multiple players noted issues with bugs, janky controls, and unclear level design that sometimes led to frustrating falls or soft locks. Despite these rough edges, the game was seen as a promising prototype given the time constraints of the jam, with potential for further polish and refinement.

Ahhh love the music in the background! Really nice.
There was something wonky going on with the collision of the player when you flip to a different direction. This caused quite some (funny) glitches for me and sometimes made it feel unfair when I died or whatever.
But yeah, I see y'all had some unforseen time restraints so I totally get that such polishing wasn't put in.
Anyway, nice job. I liked hitting monsters with my book. lol

Took me a few tries because I kept accidentally falling off the map, but I eventually got to the end. The second spell was cool, I like how it alternates between being a direct attack and a projectile!

Nice pixel graphics, good idea but to be honest I had a strange feeling about character movement, but I guess with some testing and fine tuning it can be improved. Sometimes I 'lost', fall somewhere without seeing my hero... I am not sure if it was a bug or a feature.:)

I can see that a lot of thought went into the spells and the game as a whole. I must say though, the entire experience felt very... janky? If that's the right word? The jumping physics felt very "heavy" along with the fact that turning around next to a block meant you basically always got shot out into the opposite direction, no invincibility frames resulted into one contact with an enemy meaning instant death, and as soon as I reached the boss I straight up walked off the map because I kept walking into the direction I was in when I entered the boss arena, haha.
However, it remains a fun concept, as was messing around with the spells (especially the BOOMERANG BOOK, man I need to get one of those IRL)SubmittedHow To Summon Demons 101

Nice entry with some well designed spells. Good music.
Adding more art details to levels would improve the atmosphere.
There were some moments where the next step was ambigious. As a result, I ended up falling multiple times from edge of the map and was forced to restart the game. Maybe a few arrows (which would also replace "Go here" text) would fix the issue.
Anyway, thanks for submission.

The idea was nice! I especially liked unlocking the third spell and seeing that it combines with the first one. That was a nice surprise and showed that some real thought went into designing the spells. It was at times hard to know where to go or what to do, but I wouldn't necessarily call that a bad thing if the intent was to make exploration an element - very hard to make that work in 48 hours though.

I like the sprites and the spells are cool, but I ran into a bunch of bugs, the level design was very unorthodox, and the jumping mechanic needed some work. I can see that you probably were trying to make more gameplay rather than making it play perfectly since you can't do everything in a game jam. Good job overall, though

I like the classic style of it and throwing around the... chocolate ice-cream sandwich? 😂 I think I found a bug where if you die after getting the next spell, I couldn't find a way to get it back, a little polish around the edges might have helped but I appreciate you guys had some time issues, overall though this had a nice, classic feel to it and is a good foundation if you continue to work on it :)

I played your game on stream: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1628068563?t=00h09m08s
For only getting half the time it was a fun little prototype, though I still got soft locked.
