Jam Royale

Jam Royale

This time we decided to switch roles between developers... The programmer (Riuku) would do the art and the artist (dosto) would do the programming. As expected, we're quite lost and will need your help. In this game you get to do just that! Participate in the regular Jam Royale, make the game from start to finish and battle between all the jam folks to get the highest score!

Oops: The end screen shows you some button prompts (quit, restart and submit score) but the "submit score" is the only button that actually works! Don't worry about it, carry on.

Oops 2: Apparently the online leaderboard is super bugged out and sometimes doesn't let you submit. Sorry about that! Also they score results may be a bit... weird.

For a tip to the music review scene look the bottom of this information.

Very good art and programming. Maybe you should switch roles permanently?

  • Fachewachewa

Not sure how this relates to the theme, but it was really fun! I just got a little confused about the review, even knowing it wanted numbers didn't help, because I accidentally typed something above 10 and got stuck on it for a while before deleting everything 😅

  • Henry Haak

This game gets a 10 for sound because my fabulous composition was in it

  • dreamcastgh0st

Really cute, and I love the idea of your team members switching roles. When I got to hear my awful rendition of Axel F on the results screen-- that moment was golden. The game is definitely very short, and doesn't have huge replay value, which is unfortunate. It's going to be a very quick experience for whoever's playing, but that experience oozes with personality and unique ideas. Nice work!

At one point we had the idea that the game content that you created (code, music, art etc.) would get submitted alongside the score and you could view other players' creations. I wish we'd had time to implement that because I would love to hear your interpretation of the classic and everyone else's masterpieces.

      Thanks for playing :)

  • Ivanbje

    haha, love it.

I tried so hard to get a high score and got really sad I ended up last, then I realized that the scores were all the same 🤣.

When I was asked to rate my song, I immidiately started hammering all the number keys as fast as I could, and for some reason I hit space and that made the text go to the next line, so everytime I filled the screen I would press space again, then all of a sudden, all of the numbers disappeared and the game got softlocked.

    really enjoyed the game though.

Everyone is a winner in Jam Royale! That's why everyone gets the same score. This is 100% intended and not a bug.

Thanks for playing and for the comment. Happy to hear that you enjoyed it!

Oh man this was awesome! Love the art style (so cute!) and the fun minigames (the movement with the duck was really cool!) It was funny to see that my 'game' was rated with the gm48 categories. I can't believe you switched roles and still made this, it was really cool!

  • Ethan Wake

This "jam within a jam" really brought a smile to my face. Each minigame is totally relateable, particularly the one where you have to hurriedly make music. Very cute and funny!

  • baku

How does it feel to now know that each of you could very comfortably steal the other's job? XD

This was cute! I had expected the final score to be entirely random, which would be very funny to see on the leaderboards, so the fact that every single score is identical was a letdown. But other than that I had fun.

You know we always make a bit of fun of the programmer placeholder art Riuku is throwing into our games. When they started delivering the art for this game I was like are you kidding me this is very good what is happening. I really didn't expect us to do this well since we have been doing our original roles so strictly. It was nice and weird and I def want to try this again.

The damned score result system ended up being so bad :,D I started slapping some wild math to it about 45 minutes before dl and just wished for the best. The implementation resulting wasn't the idea we had planned.

      I feel dispensable!

Tbh I was surprised to see that we got a somewhat finished product out after all. Having used gm myself since I was a tiny person I'd forgotten that it's intended to be easy to learn and it does that job well. Dosto is a fast learner too obviously, and did so well!

We shortly thought about the idea of highscore being random. I'll have to implement that for some future jam because I think that's hilarious and cruel.

      Thanks for playing :)

  • Argot Bertha

That was...pretty out there, though once I worked out the direction it was going in, it was interesting to go along for the ride. Pretty much every round, I got what the asset was, but the first round with the duck and the crazy controls, I really couldn't say. In the end, I like the fact it went somewhere totally off-the-wall. If jams aren't the place to do that, where can you? I ended up with 3.56. I'll take it.

  • Seltzy

This is very cute and made me happy. Especially when my song was playing at the end. I truly am a musical genius. Brought a tear to my eye.

  • Luke No Further

Flippin bonkers mate. It does feel in a game jam that you just have to lurch from one thing to another and not dwell on whether thing you just did was good but y'know you just have to move on. The mashing the keyboard to make up a song and then bam move on... wow.... I feel seen XD

I liked our idea too and I actually ended up being a bit sad I had promised to do my first time game jam coding experience just now. I wish I could have implemented the mini games even a bit better way since I was so excited about them. But it is what it is and so on.

Thanks for playing and leaving feedback!

  • whatthesamuel

Wow this had the 'Kuukiyomi feel'. Solid work! Haven't played Wario ware, but definitely felt like kuukiyomi. Which is nice!

Also the artwork was pleasing, and playtime was great to play as a game jam submission!

I haven't played the games mentioned here but I sure have to check out how much we accidentally copied those :D Thanks for the feedback!

  • Quentin Van Deutekom

I really enjoyed this one , like others have pointed out it kind of reminded me of Wario Ware, but the game Jam spin on it was hilarious and relateable! My only complaints are that the Island theme didnt really play a big role and that for some reason the game woulnd't let me quit when I had finished, but those are minor things in comparison to all the good stuff here. I loved all of the minigames, enjoyed the lighthearted take and the smaller details made the game carry a great charming atmosphere

Riuku, 5 minutes after the dl: "- Btw did you implement those options on the ending screen?"

      Me: "-Well the thing is"

Super cute game that was a lot of fun! Loved the amount of variety in gameplay. The graphics were very charming and full of personality, and the music fit really well. Great work!

  • Happysquared

Wow you were right! Figuring out the controls really was a lot of fun haha. I absolutely love this entry. It's so full of personality and I think it was one of the entries that most affected me emotionally. As in when I was playing, I had a huge grin on my face. It filled me with delight! All the time when I was playing it, I was thinking "oooo I can't wait to see what happens next!"

It's so whimsical. The artwork compliments the music really well too. The variety of mini games kept it super fresh. I felt the feeling of hustling where ahhh got to get this "jam" game done!

Just an absolutely delightful entry whose mood and variety made it such a breath of fresh air. Just such a cute game that really inspired that feeling of "delight". You could really appreciate the small touches placed inside it. Like the music you compose playing at the end of the game. Just made me smile more. It's just those neat touches that really make the game feel special. The inclusion of these mechanically "unnecessary" things just made it so fun and quirky. It's very different from the other games you've worked on, yet still maintains the level of detail and polish I've come to expect on all your entries.

ya Had a small issue where I got stuck on the song haha. But I think that's part of the gameplay. Should have known I needed to write numbers haha.

code And this is my excellent coding skills. So yeah, clearly the game is "good".

Also I managed to get on the leaderboard and Lee couldn't figure out how so I feel happy about that.

Game has so much heart and personality to it and I love it.

Thank you so much happy! I'm glad to hear that you had a good time with it!

Because we switched development roles for this one and worked on areas unfamiliar to us, I feel that it made all the sense to just make a game that doesn't take itself seriously and is basically just a series of features and visuals that we thought were funny. We had tons of fun making it and it's heartwarming to see you and others get a kick out of it!

This game is super cute! I thought it was a fun idea simulating making a jam game through little mini games. The idea of switching roles is a lot of fun and it resulted in a really charming game. My only complaint is that the game is biased towards happysquared as they were able to submit a score to the leaderboard even though it's bugged. :D

Edit: Hmm I went to look at the code dosto wrote and found this:

  • Tydecon Games

Of all the games I've played this jam, this was definitely the most unique, a jam within a jam, so meta! Plus the style was very different and interesting - I enjoyed this one. It took me a little time to fully understand what was going on but overall, it's a fun entry!

Thanks a lot! We gave the player very loose instructions on what to do on purpose, because we thought it was funny that you needed to figure out what to do. So it's fair to say it can be a bit confusing, oops! Happy to hear you enjoyed it!

It should automatically let you into the next phase after the time is up. If it doesn't, that means there's a bug. Sorry about that! Thanks for playing :)

Edit. Ah sorry I misread! You were talking about the rating part. In that one you have to type in a number to be able to continue!

  • Junction Games

This has been the only game so far that I've replayed a bunch of times. It's fun and quirky enough to keep me coming back! Very loose theme usage, but it's in there a couple places at least.

  • Chris Bradel

P cute! It's like a baby WarioWare. Hardly island themed outside the intro but I still had a nice time playing it!

nice graphic, but unrelated to the topic and there are bugs.
